i know people that choke their dogs off, and it didnt affect them but im a 100% believer in a breakstick, i have seen it before but id choose a breakstick.

Yes. I'm a firm believer that ignorance isn't a good excuse for stupidity. I was only calling the guys beating their dogs off pigs dipnumber 2s. Not the chokers. Don't have such thin skin. Sticks and stones and all that right? |

I think a few on this thread are full of it. Catching hogs on the WWW is different then in the woods.

At the back of every dogs mouth God created a gap just perfect for a break stick.

Like I said, to each their own, BUT......
I will never understand why people choke (which CAN cause damage over time to your dog, both physically and mentally), or hit their CD's over the head to break them off a hog, when they are doing something you WANT them to do, that they are SUPPOSED to do. If one knows (NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE) how to properly manipulate a break stick, you can indeed break a bulldog off effectively. I have broken off some VERY powerful hard biters, with bi lateral carpal tunnel in my hands/wrists, with a break stick. No choking or punching needed. All the time it takes to choke a dog to where he's about to sleep to let go, he could have been broken off with a break stick multiple times over.
I do not tell people what to do or what not to do with their dogs, but this is just how I feel/handle mine.
Amen ma'am! I had a buddies friend hit one of my dogs to get him off a hog. I saw him do it and stopped doing what I was doing. I told him if he ever lays another hand on any of my dogs he wouldn't be leaving the woods we were hunting. |

One of my friends starting picking his catch dog up by the rear end until vertical over the hog and he just let's go of the ear. New one for me, but works like a charm.

Does choking a bulldog discourage them from catching? Cause I can get my bulldogs off a hog but ever know in then she won't get off so I choke her collar will that affect her catching iny
Im sorry your question got flipped all around to " the best way to break a bulldog" but to answer your original question I personally don't think choking them off hurts in no way I'm not saying take a 2x4 and pop her over the head ,and she will be good to go within 20 seconds of when you get her off and I bet next time you turn her loose to a hog she catches just like she did the last |

I have mostly hunted with gritty strike dogs and now and then I would keep a bulldog or 2...but I tapped them gently on the head and kept pressure on the collar and repeated the word "break" until they turned loose...then petted them up pretty good...after a while they learn to let go without too much hassle...

I don't think it will make them stop catching. I do believe a break stick is a better idea. Or u could do like I do. I hunt farm ground and all hogs must die so I just stick the pig and once it stops moving they let go.

First of all never said I've broken a k9 and for those of you on here who have done it all and seen it all I truly admire you. I've hunted on and off for twenty years now and still learn something every time I hit the woods. I broke a molar using a stick once on one of the hardest biting dogs I've ever seen and swore Id never use one again. Accidents happen.

ive only seen one dog come out with broken teeth from a breakstick and that was because the guy with the breakstick was a moron, and he didnt know how to use it.

we break all our dogs off with a twist of the collar. Where do do some of you folks come up with choken one till the dog passed out? Cut off the air supply dog has to start trien to breath. It goes from trien to keep a bite to getting oxygen. A constant pull away from the hogs ear and a gasp for air and the dog is off. I've had more trouble trien to get a break stick in a dogs jaws, because they had a whole ear sucked in the mouth, I couldn't get a break stick in between them. Different strokes for different folks. Ain't a right or wrong way. Its what works for you and your dogs.
