Well the forecast for NE OK for the next five days is sleet, snow, highs in the 20's and single digit lows. Just wondering what all steps does everyone use for conditions like this. All my dog barrels are facing south, and they are packed full of straw. And I've been laying the feed to them knowing this was coming. Other than that what else can be done. Tomorrow I was going to try and fashion some flaps out of an old stall mat to cover the holes in the barrels. Anything else to be done? What's everyone else do? Looking for any ideas out the for the benefit of everyone here.

X2, watery feed takes less energy n moisture from the dog to digest, plus, warming it will allow them to get back in the barrel with a warm belly of food just like we like havin somethin warm in our stomachs. |

How would a momma dog fair if she just whelped? Our CD due soon. She'll prob be in the garage I'm just curious how shed do with us moving her in.

I set up a kennel in my shop every time I whelp a litter, I do it in the winter up here and they do well. My whelping box has an air space under it so I can put one of those flat heat pads under part of it so they can get on the heat or away from it.

All the big dogs got fresh straw hay this morning. I've got all my bases covered but one issue. I've got a gyp that is starting to ween. Last nite she was gettin on the pups tryin to keep them off her and i guess a couple got spooked because of it and ended up outside the box. Put them back in but they all kept coming back out because I was there, lol. It was cold and late and I didn't want to wait and see if they went back in so I just brought the whole litter inside. Better safe than sorry.
Took them back out this morning and she was bagged up and no issues so far today. Have to wait and see about tonite.
On another note...one of my chickens got to close to my new bulldog. He won't need as much feed tonite, lol.

I been mixing some of the canned beef & rife dog food warmed up and mixing it with the dry food. Keeps em full, fat, warm & happy. Lol good luck everyone ! Be careful out there

Thanks for the replies everyone. The steps I listed are what I have always done and has worked for me. I was just wondering what everyone else did for the cold, always looking to gain more knowledge. It was colder than a witch's titty in a snowmans mouth today and is supposed to get colder. Got home from work this evenin and cut the dogs loose to run in the yard and itn seemed like they were lovin it. Especially my 7mo old pups. I got a kick out of watchin them slip around on my back deck! Thanks again and stay warm everyone!!

If it dips down to bad n it would be feasable, daisy chain some standard light recepticles to each other, paint the bulbs black or red put 1 in each dog house. A 100-150w light bulb will get pleanty warm, but not as hot as a heat lamp

I spoil the few dogs I have, I have heater cable that they use in the Chemical Plants and Refineries to keep the pipes from freezing and I wrap it on the bottom of their barrels. I don't know how much power it uses but the dogs sure do like it...
