I'm finally getting back to some hog hunting. Its been a busy fall since bear season ended. I haven't had a lot of time for young dogs this year and am getting a late start. The two dogs on the left are about 10 months old. Caught a couple of sows last week that they got in on. Caught this boar yesterday. When i got to him they had him stretched out and nearly crippled in the front end.

Well they are wide open like a plott is suppose to be. They are not for everyone but they suit me. Thanks for looking.

Seth is right, Plotts are not for everyone, but I used to be a "silent on track man" myself. I ran curs and cur/crosses for years and believed if the dog barked it really hurt my chances. Now , after running Plotts for two years I can assure you it doesn't matter at all. I'm sure there are several on this board that will dispute me on this but ask them how many of them actually have a VERY GOOD sampling of both styles? Not just a couple hunts!!!!! I love the Plotts and I really hate to hear of people not giving them a chance because of some MYTH, that I STRONGLY disagree with. I think that all to often the Plotts get grouped in to the category of the typical Boo-Hooing hound and that couldn't be futher from the truth. The Plotts like Seth and many of the other big game hunters run will flat fly, pull hair, and catch game. Thanks for the pics Seth.

I agree with you Alvin. All though I do believe there are instances when a quiet dog can help you, overall, I don't think it matters a whole lot. I am the only hog hunter in my area that runs straight hounds. My hunting partner is straight curs. Where I hunt, I've never seen a cur show me something I thought I was missing, whether it was on bear, hogs, or lions. I need a dog that can strike a track off the rig and not just wind hogs. I need a dog that will cold trail until he jumps. I need a fast dog that once jumped, runs with its head up and runs to catch. I want a dog that doesn't quit. I want a dog that does what ever it takes to shut one down once they catch up. I want a dog that either before or when I tell them to, stretch or try and stretch anything they bay. I don't haul bull dogs. I think they are are waist of time, feed, and space on my rig. Therefore, my plotts have to hold one until I can get a leg. Every once in a while when things are out of hand, I will pull a pistol out and end it. That is the role I play in my pack but it doesn't happen often. Plotts don't get a fair shake in a lot of places. Hog hunters around here call about anything that is brindle a plott. There is another thread going on right now about papers. I keep papered dogs that I have either first or second hand knowledge of for the last 40+ years. I don't think papers mean a hill of beans if you are staying within your hunting circle but it is just another valuable tool, among many, for making breeding decisions about dogs you do not have any factual knowledge about. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and thanks for reading.

I know what a Plott is Seth. Was not putting Plotts down at all. I respect and like Plotts for their history and abilities on big game. I just do not like hearing a dog bark till their face to face with a hog! Just what I like. Again nice hunt and good looking Plotts.
