Never owned one...seem to small to me to really hold a BIG pig. I could be wrong though.

A bulldog in a small terrier body. Tenacious, hard, and driven. NEED a job, or they will drive you insane. We have a few.

Patterdale terriers are more commonly referred to in the UK as Fell Terriers. They are bred to "go to ground" and fight face to face with a fox, badger, etc. They are burrowing, underground specialists and very game. They do not make good pets. Nothing they were bred to do in any way relates to hog hunting. They are not baydogs, they are not catchdogs. The ones Ive owned were more of a problem than anything else. They are too gamey to let run loose as a pet, so they have to be kept on a chain or in a pen, and they will often fight another dog. They are not game like a bulldog, but some will fight. They cant be trusted around livestock either. I would say you have to treat them like a game bred bulldog. Most people I ever knew who owned Patterdales, just kept them for the novelty of it and bred them and sold puppies. Not much sport for groundwork in the United States. I don't know too many guys digging out fox lairs 20 feet under the ground and using dynamite and all that stuff they do over in England and Ireland. If you want to own a tough little dog that is gritty as hell but has no real practical purpose, then try you one. Patterdales are Jagdterriers without the nose and hunt.

They are real good little dogs, generally. They are smart, head strong , independent, and Prey Driven. If you start with good blood and invest the time to disapline , train and direct that Drive. You would have a real good dog. Most are hotter nosed, but have plenty of hunt......comes with the drive thing. LOL. They are not for everyone for sure!

Typically they are ground dogs yes, but the ones we have here will strike/bay a hog (if it's a biggun) or catch if it's smaller or they have backup, with no hesitation. We don't usually do ground work here, primarily hogs.
We do not let any of our dogs roam free, as we do own bulldogs, so every dog has it's secure area, so we don't worry about that. When we have them out to hunt, they run just fine together and with other dogs because they know they're working. A lot of terriers are nutty, but the ones we have here can come in the house for some lovins from the kids and they'll roll over to be pet. It depends on what you are willing to deal with I guess. They need to be busy. Not a 'strictly pet' type dog for sure. We like em a lot. A bit more 'personable' actually then our Jagds.

How do they hunt for you ?
If you're talking to me.... generally range out about between 500-900 yards, and checks in (surprisingly) every fifteen minutes or so give or take if there's no hot trail. Also, of all the times we've run them, we've only had to pull one out of a hole one time, lol, which is pretty darn good! |

How do they hunt for you ?
I tend to keep mine pretty close, they won't bark much in a group over 1. They hunt hard though. Different family lines can be VERY different from one another, enough to make a guy think they were different breeds. Different style of dog obviously makes for different showing in the woods. |

Nope, not broke just to hogs. I think that would prove very difficult with these terriers.  They primarily run hogs but if they come across something in their path they will obliterate it and move on, lol. Got a couple of two of the boys, gotta get pics yet of the rest of 'em. My husband's dog "Mak"  My dog "Archer"  |
