I use to hate em, and never really culled for it, but I didn't care for it. BUT I've got a red male pup, and have hunted with his littermates a time or two, and they're all pretty OPEN. They can be real mouthy on a track and real mouthy when it breaks, and it doesn't bother me a bit now. I'm selective with the people I hunt with, so I don't worry about them being mad about an open dog. I will tell you outta the open cur dogs I've hunted with, you've never had to ask em to hunt, run something, or beg em to do their job. They ain't for everybody, but it sure saves me from having to look at my Garmin a bunch, so it saves me a few dollars on batteries

Ive never cared for them in the past. My Jasper dog would open when He was chasing deer....so that was a good indicator he was trashing. Other than that he was silent. I've had a few that open for a short distance when the hog breaks. Then I've got my Preacher pup (16 months). He's not a cur.....he's a Bluetick, he's my first real experiment with open dogs and the jury is still out. Over the years I've hunted with a few open dogs owned by other people. If I was forced to make a decision right now..... I'd say an open dog is not for me and my reasoning would be that they push hogs further than necessary. I'm not gonna argue this point....just saying that's been my experience. If your open dogs stop them quick, more power to you.

Who if anyone has line of legit open currs without a hound in the mix for, lets say 5 generations? Not being rude at all, i just havent heard of many true open currs that didnt have at least one hound in the woodpile somewhere. Im not saying im interested in owning one but i do like reading about different dogs/lines.

Mt curs probably have some hound in them from way back and I bred many generations with no hound in them...some were open some were semi silent... l liked them...but liked those best that opened about 3 times when they located a good track and then shut up until they jumped or bayed the hog...after the hog broke bay some opened more than others but all were fast on track...if i didn't like them they would have been gone...i don't like a dog that is open when running a feeder track or one that opens on a cold track...if a dog is open it needs to be a fast track dog...I prefer a dog that opens just enough to know he struck and which way he is going...sometimes they wouldn't open and if I didn't see a dog for a while it was time to pull out the tracker...the dogs I have now are about the same style...

Doesn't bother us one bit.. Justin I've seen plenty of lines 5 generations back that are cuts and still open as all get out. If you don't like an open dog then you've probably never hunted a good one.
Bens pup is out of boogie. The most open cur dog I've hunted behind. I'd put boogie against any dog out there.
We don't categorize our dogs as silent or open, they are either a hog dog or a cull

Tony said it right. You can catch as many hogs with a silent dog as you can with dogs that are open. As long as they are fast on a track and staying hooked with a hog and putting hogs to a bay. Every dog I have is open and they get the job done.

Nathan,
I like an open or closed moth cur dogs, as long as they get out and find a hog and will go a long way to get the job done.

I hunted one gyp for for a long time. Caught more hogs with just her than I do now with a whole pack of dogs and she was open. After she got killed I read up on a bunch of silent curs and had it stuck in my head that I was going to start back with all silent curs. Drove all over several states buying pups off silent lines that were supposed to be the real deal. After I saw the lack of hunt and bottom, I'm back to feeding these open east texas cur dogs.

The only ones I catch now are deaf. The real fine sounding races are when them open mouthed suckers get on a deer. They'll make just about any deer dog jealous with the song they're singing.

I've been hunting with silent dogs ever since the first day I went and the older man I hunted with if he had a dog that started barking on track he'd cull it when we got back to truck and I've seen him cull some open mouth dogs that anyone could take and catch hogs with but he hated the barking and I hunted with him so long I hated it to but as the years went by hogs got to running worse I'm talking several hours usually per hog even with dogs that wouldn't make a sound until bayed and if I could still have my way id own 20 silent good hog dogs but I know hogs are still going to run so now I have a plott and one cur dog that barks a little on track and the rest of the dogs don't. But these silent dogs we have, have to run them just as far as these other two dogs so It's getting to where a little barking don't bother me.

You got the wrong impression Tony, i have nothing against em and have hunted with a few nice open dogs, i just personally prefer silent dogs. Different strokes is all.
