anyone have any experience with this cross? One of the guys I hunt with and I have talked about breeding my bloodhound to one of his curs. Any thoughts? Good Idea/Bad Idea?

The ones I've seen were Jumbo sized dogs, one male was every bit of 90 lbs. I think it would all depend more on the type of cur than anything. Blood hound genetics show up heavy physically in crosses I've seen, probably because of the 1,000+ years they have been established. I had a bloodhound X walker that was all leg and was on his way to being a great one.

Kinda what i thought, My bloodhound male is 120 pounds easy and I figured that his DNA would produce some jumbo sized dogs. Not sure if a cur could even carry for him. Might have to go male cur female BH.

I've heard of a few dogs off that cross, and saw one in person, but never hunted behind any. The dog I saw in person was a bigger framed dog. I was told it was a decent track dog from someone who knows dogs, he was just slow, and that seems to be a common feature among that cross. Personally I think it will produce slower type track dogs.

that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping for cur framed hounds that might have a little colder nose. Probably way too much hound dna and bloodhounds are notoriously big and slow. Not really traits you want in a hog dog. May try it once anyway just for grins and giggles. you never know ......

With a little looking you can find what you want in a full cur or full hound, but there's plenty of crosses of the two that produce some sure enough dogs.

Usually if there aren't many of them there's a reason. People hav been hog hunting with dogs for a long time.

I run redbone cur crosses. I really like my gyp. She isn't a super cold nosed dog but u don't have to have steam in them either. She is fast as all get out. Size is about the same as a YBMC. She is also rough.
On the other hand the male I have out of a completely different breeding is cold nosed. He is slow as all get out. Crazy as a crap house rat. He is smaller than my gyp. But he has as pretty of a bawl mouth as u have heard. He is not rough at all.
The last 2 reasons is why I keep him. He may not be the first to a bay but he will be there. He is always there before me and him being loose and that big bawl mouth helps find them when the rest catch.
Here is my thinking on the blood hound cross. Blood hounds are known for a great nose and could put all the nose u ever wanted in a dog. They are also known to be slow un gangly dogs. Just kinda clumsy. This is a trait I don't like in a hog dog. While adding nose to a cur that is the only thing I see it brings to the table.
With that being said its ur dogs ur Buisiness. Do as u will. U are the one that matters cause u will either be the one to feed or cull them.
