Open Vs. Closed

What is the reason hog hunters have a preference over open mouth dogs vs. closed mouth dogs. What factors would sway your decision either way? Does it matter if at the end of the line theres hog?

I have hunted with both and prefer a silent dog. Seems like with a open mouth dog you seem to just run alot more and not catch them as you do with a silent dog. But I'm definatly not saying you cant catch hogs with open mouthed dogs because you can. I think your at a little disadvantage on places that you hunt alot.

yeah thanks for replying.  I run closed mouth dogs, but thinking about getting open dogs or semi-open for a little more range. My opinion now is that it's no big deal if they pop off on a hot trail running full speed.

I dont think having a open mouthed dog means its going to be any longer ranged than a closed mouth dog.

well for the most part arent open mouth dogs usually hounds or hound crosses

Imo if the hogs run a little with a closed mouth dog get ready for some races when you put them open ones down. Being open does not mean anything as far as dogs. I have hunted behind silent hounds and open cur dogs. As far as range goes the hounds i have hunted behind were generally shorter range but would take alot colder track and had more bottom to stick with the track. BUT i have seen cur dogs take tracks hounds wouldnt take and stick longer than hounds. It all depends on the dog and what you want to hunt behind everyone hunts different with different dogs.
