I am moving to Texas from GA in three to six months or less due to work. I will be based in Austin. I am hoping to live outside of Austin due to no chaining of dog laws. I will be bringing 6 or 7 dogs with me. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated as I know nothing about Texas hunting. looking to make some new hunting friends. I have good curs and been doing this for over 10 years. I usually only hunt one or two dogs out at a time with walk in catch dogs. I have dogs that will road, wind, track and free cast. I will be willing to travel a good ways to hunt with some new people and hopefully make some new friends. to my current friends reading this I will call you and explain the recent news of moving soon. I have a lot of breeding's happening in the next few years and I usually give pups to friends to help cull and raise dogs to breed back to...so any serious dog men that would like to help with that would be nice. I love to hunt and can hunt all day and night. I stay out of trouble and always pitch in with work or expenses.
what is the hog population near Austin like? what are the hogs like? can you sell live hogs? are there a lot of no chaining laws and dog limit laws around other places like Austin? what's the terrain/hunting like? how hard is it to find places to hunt? I will be willing to get on leases if need to hunt hogs so any info on big leases would help. I am used to hunting mountains, swamps, rivers, clear cuts, I am used to having to really hunt hard for hogs because or population isn't as high.
there are so many questions I have but I don't want to overdue it, so any info is of big help to me.

Depending on how far you want to drive to work there are some nice towns north and south of Austin. I would avoid east and west of Austin. I am 35 miles north. Outside of Georgetown. There are no leases around for hog hunting. Deer hunters have it all. It is hard to pick up land to hunt but it can be done. Hog population is thick in some areas and zero a mile down the road.

Koyote76 I live about 45 minutes east of Round Rock. There are a few of us that hunt together over here and we like to hunt with different folks. There are a lot of different types of hunting here. Most of what we hunt is pasture land with big blocks of hard woods and thick under brush and briars. We cast hunt these places. There is also a lot of farm land that we hunt a little different. I have another buddy that lives in the Liberty Hill/Leander area just northwest of Austin that is limestone, cactus, and cedar covered hills. As for hogs there are plenty. Think I caught 62 in January. There are lots of hunters around too. The fad is "in" right now. Be glad to make a round when you get here.

thanks for the heads up I will try to find a home north or south, hope its not to hard to find a home that has enough room for all the dogs. I would be willing to get a deer lease for deer provided I can run dogs. I really don't care about deer too much, but I always need a few for the freezer. thanks for the advice.

thanks for all the information. I would be happy and look forward to hunting with yall. I figured there would be a lot of hunters due to the fad lol, I miss the days when few people knew about hog hunting before YouTube and TV shows made it so popular. 62 in Jan Is a nice haul! im glad there are plenty of hogs. do people kill all hogs, barr them, or sell them?

I live it Hutto. Just East of Round Rock, northeast of austin.
Depending on where you're going to work in Austin will really tell you where to live. I myself take the toll road 38 miles to work in south Austin.
As others mentioned the nicer areas around Austin are Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Georgetown. I say Hutto too, but to far away for some. Those three cities are going to have higher home values but the chance of finding a house with any acreage is a little more slim. It's 90+ percent subdivisions.
There are homes for sale for sure just easier to find something with room for dogs in smaller towns like Hutto (north), Eligin (east), Manor (east), Dripping Springs (south), Buda or Kyle (south), Cedar Park (north). Tons of places.
Do you know where your job is. Will help narrow down depending on your driving preferences.
I'm brand new to this, just took my Dogo out for second time in the pen this last week. But I'm looking for people to hunt with so give me a shout when you get into town.

thanks for all the living advice.....job will be based smack dab in the center of Austin. I definitely need room for my dogs so those smaller towns are probably what im going to be looking for. congrats on getting started. I will be happy to go hunting with you.

There are so many hogs around that we either tie'em or stick'em. Land owners aren't real happy with you if they find out you didn't get rid of something you had your hands on, lol. There are a few that do it though. I remember when it wasn't cool too. That's probably the only plus I can find with summer time and deer season is the non devoted usually fall out of the race. We take a few to the sale here and there but not a lot. We look forward to hunting with you.

koyote76 is a friend of mine and I wish he was moving closer to me than Austin. I will vouch for him as a good dog man and straight hunter. Any one that can should meet him when he gets here and show him some country.
Kerry your not to far away to make a trip up here couple of times a year, but I am planning some hunting trips down that way in the next year and we will go run some for sure.

Sent u a pm, surely somebody can give u some input on a slab, u might message Strike Dog Kennels on here and pick his brains on the subject. He was really disappointed with the 1st set he poured, might be able to tell you some things to avoid. He is a good friend of mine and will definetly steer you in the right direction.
