freeze brand???

Thinking about marking all my dogs.  Wondering if any of y'all had freeze branded any dogs with longer hair.  I have a cat with medium length hair and was wondering how it would turn out?  Not sure if I should order a smaller brand and just do the inside of her ear?  My cur dogs dog have slick coats but are still relatively short.  Thanks.

If u are thinkin about doing the inner ear i wouldnt rule out buyin a cheap tattoo kit on ebay. I picked one up a while back and plan on tattoo'ing the inner ear of all pups i have on my yard from here on out, i think it would help me keep better records of them to look back on years down the road as well as offer a little insurance in the event one would ever be stolen and issues arose during retrieval if he were found.

I'm just wondering when the hair grows back if the 2-3" hair will be legible or not?  All the photos of I seen on here and google, all seem to be short haired dogs.

It will be readable and normal looking

Depends on the method used and the time the iron stays on as to what result you will have.

Either kill the pigment in the hair....and it will grow back white in the branded area.

Or will kill the follicles.  And will scar over and not grow any hair back.

Tip......if your a novice .......be extremely careful attempting freeze branding on your good dogs. Easy to mess up.

Tattoo kit is a good idea from above as well.

I use the same tat kit i use for doin my own ink. Tsc has a tat kit that is a clamp style with letters n numbers, slide what u want in the jaw, apply ink, n squeeze tight on the ear. Its not as hood as an actual tat gun but it works so so

It will b in the area with the syringes n neddle tips, ivomec n cattle wormer. I cant say all tsc stores carry it, but they should b able to order it. Its around $70 with a few letters n numbrs. Extra letters cost extra. The down side that type kit, u cant create ur own design, as compared to an actual tat gun gun, tubes, needls n ink. The highest priced item would b the power supply n foot peddle. Coil guns can b picked up around $20, then disposable tubes n needles run around anothr $20 or so n then dependin on ink, a couple $ to like i use, $30 for a pint, but its the only ink my body will take n hold.

I want to say I paid around 110$ for a complete setup up with 12 or so different inks and 3 cheap guns with the pedal and control........been awhile tho, hell I couldn't even tell ya where the thing is right now hahaha. Im gonna check out tractor supply tomorrow to see if they have one like you are talking about.

Toyota Todd, freeze branding is way better in my opinion than tattooing. Granite it takes about 1 month or so for it to scab up and heal enough to get em back in the woods. There ain't no question though as to who's dog they are with a brand weather it be a fire or freeze brand. That tattooing is a waste in my opinion. I bought my iron from l&h brands in North Dakota, I drew what I wanted and they made it. It turned out nice enough that I branded my forearm with it. The coat don't make a difference because you shave it down to the bare skin and then when it grows back white the hair falls into place just like it was before except with your brand now in white. You ain't gotta go digging in their ears or anything like that to see what's what. Very minimal pain associated with the brand.i would tell you to use liquid nitrogen for sure instead of dry ice and alcohol. Way faster and good brands every time. Right around $80 for a tank and you can do about 20 dogs with a tank on both hams.

Junior, I think you are over thinking the tattoo'in a bit...... there no "diggin in their ears" lol, flip the ear inside out and there is either a tattoo or there ain't, doesn't take 10 secs to look at and it doesn't take more than a minute to tattoo them as pups plus you don't have to wait a month for them to heal up, its done when they are young pups before they can hunt anyhow.

No your right justin, I just like brands better that's all. It definitely takes longer than a minute to brand each dog. For the iron to frost high enough on the rod to have the brand cold enough and then holdin the brand to each ham for 25 sec then repeat on other ham and then repeat on each dog. Brands are just cleaner in my opinion. I would for sure say if your wanting to tattoo puppies ears before they were sent out to other homes that would be beneficial for later identifying because you can't brand a puppie as it will look ridiculous when it grows up. I agree with that; however, I personally don't keep enough dogs on my yard to be selling grown dogs or even trade em. What I have is what I have. If they work they stay if they don't they bite some lead. And then if I'm down to where I need pups I will raise a litter to get my numbers where I need them to be. My ideal number is six grown dogs, 2 strings of three dogs. For that matter brands are better for me because theft reasons I can look at my dogs without having to look at a brand or a tattoo and tell if they are mine or not but if someone happened to get there hands on one of my dogs ( more than likely you gunna be dog bit) there is no question as we are wearing the same brand. Can't really argue that. I typically don't sell pups so tattoos aren't really beneficial to me.

It's sad, but nowadays if you think a dog is halfway decent, you had better mark it someway.  There is a ridiculous amount of dog theives running around, and with the way hogs run, its only a matter of time before someone picks a dog up a few miles away.  I freeze brand mine in hopes that it will make them think twice about putting one in the back of the truck.

I ordered a brand a hair bigger then I should have, so they get branded behind the front shoulder in the ribs. It doesn't look bad though, especially now that I'm use to it. We hunted the night before, got a few dogs cut up, then branded em the next morning, and they were back in the woods the next weekend.

Junior I hear ya, I don't sell hardly any pups myself, like you mentioned its more for future id down the road. I have looked into the freeze brands before and once I get these mutts and myself a little better organized I am more than likely going to start freeze branding mine as well as an ear tat. Like others have said, with all the damn thieves running around these days a big brand may prevent them from taking the wrong dog......not sure they could catch any of mine anyhow lol but it would give me a little more peace of mind.
