(Disclaimer: Due to the winter storm coming thru this part of Ga., couped up and bored as hell.) Just for the sake of some spirited discussion, what do u consider a hog dog. Ex., u can take a real dog put him n hog sign and at the end u have your quarry. Does style, terrain, genetics etc.,make a dog. Some dogs cannot transition from one environment to another. Just askin...,.

There is no right answer for everyone.
A true hog dog to me is one that will find a hog if one is to be found. He will run that hog as long as it takes. He has no interests in no animal other than a hog.
Other than these points everything else is subjective to the owners

"You can't catch hogs with loose dogs in MY area cause they'll just run and run. You need ROUGH dogs where I hunt!"
"You better have some loose baying dogs if you want to catch hogs in my area. To much pressure and they'll run!"
"Tight baying or loose baying don't matter...you gotta have endless bottom in your dogs if you want to catch dogs in MY area"
"You gotta have small dogs to get through the thick stuff if you want to catch hogs in MY area"
"You gotta have some leg under your dog and run their lungs out to catch 'em in MY area"
Lol....A REAL HOG DOG is a dog that you are able to catch hogs behind on a regular basis......period.
Can my dogs produce in Louisiana? IDK....but that's not where I hunt. How bout Arkansas or Oklahoma....can my dogs produce there? Don't know....it's not where I hunt. S.E. Texas? Don't know....NOT WHERE I HUNT! What I do know.....I CAN catch hogs WHERE I HUNT.
So.... If they aren't HOG DOGS....what are they?

But I would like to add!!!!! Lol
I'm NOT satisfied with my dogs. There are things I'm working on. Attributes I would like to see improve. I think I'll always be "tweeking", lol.

yea Kevin...you can tweak until the dogs won't quit and they either die from heat exhaustion or maybe over tweak on grit and then you lose a good dog to a hog now and then...then you tweak the other way...maybe...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Lol...made that little addition before I even saw your post DEVILDAWG.
I don't know about " proving" anything.... As I said...I'll ALWAYS be "tweeking" my dogs, but that's for ME....no one else.

Hell dont feel bad about posting this we will beat the hell out of it some more LOL.
You know everybody is different and everybody has different types of dogs . One guy says he has the best the other guy says he got the best. Ruff , Catchy, Loose , Back Off, Bottom to no end and this and that and this and that. I say who gives a damn ! Its all Rooty Poo man . If you got dogs that catch you hogs most the times you go out then those dogs are as good as the next mans . Hell his dogs may not catch hogs like yours in your conditions and yours may not catch hogs like his in his conditions again who gives a hoot, its all Rooty Poo , Mickey Mouse you need this you need that how the hell do you know what is best for me when you have never hunted with me are old so and so . So , if your dogs catch you hogs most the times when you go out you got good dogs are dogs good nuff to catch hogs whos to say his are better than yours are whos to say you need this are you need to loose this in your dogs.
A hog dog is a hog dog I dont give a damn were he comes from , who breeds him are how he is bred if he gets out there and finds you hogs and you like him the Hell with everybody else and what they think !
Just me !

This here is the Major thing that gripes my butt. When I hear a man say things like this :
If your dog aint getting out there a mile, mile and a half he aint hunting !...........Bull Chit ! I have found just as many are more hogs withend 250-500 yds than I ever had at a mile , mile and a half .
If your dog aint got big bottom he aint a hog dog ...........Bull Chit ! It dont matter that he has found stopped bayed and caught 500 in less than 20 miles !
If your dog breaks a bay he is worthless.....Bull Chit ! I guess the other 1000 he has found stopped bayed are caught mean noting ...............Bull Chit !
It just goes on and on man !
