Look at the dog instead of the breed. Expect to get dogs that hunt like an average of the two.

bingo, asking if a cat to a walker will be a good dog is a crap shoot, no one but you knows how the parents hunt. Follow this 1 simple rule and you will be just fine........breed the best to the best, period.

That best to the best rule doesn't necessarily mean the best you have to the best you have either though, it means best to the best.
If you have the very best bitch among your entire group of buddies, you should be looking for the very best dog you can possibly get access to wether its yours, your buddies or somebody across the state. If you know you don't have a dog or bitch that could be fit in the category of "best" then don't breed but get in line for pups out of a best to best breeding.

Never tried em on hogs but I had a litter and they were hell on a coon track. It had got to the point where I had a walker gyp the same age and they were beating her night in and night out. It was an accidental breeding but I'm glad it happened. Hope they work out for you if you decide to do it

Good post Terry, shoulda specified that  Cheesy.......... funny but sad story, last night I was down the road at a younger buddies house, (this cat was VERY lucky in that he started dating the daughter of a well known dogman who has over time hooked him up with pups) he started pointin to pups and talkin about im gonna breed this one to this one and that one to that one and blah blah blah........ I had to shake my head, while these dogs come from the right places they ain't seen the first damn hog yet and then to top it off he said "i'll keep what I want and sell the rest"  Angry..........

in my opinion this is one of the biggest problems with dogs now days..........not too many folks still give a damn about breeding good dogs and therefore we end up with piles and piles of culls being passed around......... if it don't work for me it won't work for anyone, I can guarantee you that lol, the right person may have that special touch to make a dog that I couldn't but they will never have the chance, nip it in the bud and take it out of the equation right then and there. it may be tough to some but its a fact of life if you are going to be serious about breeding good dogs, period..........im not where I would like to be yet but im gettin closer everyday  Grin

If you aint willing to keep them, dont breed them. Too many people breeding just because they know people that are looking for pups. If I dont want it at the time I'm not putting my dog through the stress of having and raising pups just because. I woul rather skip that heat and get her back in the woods

I think the question he was asking is if anybody has made the cross and how'd it work, not about not enough culling and scrappy dogs being sold and so on..... Just trying to get it back to what the gentleman was asking... Might take some of the mouth and nose out of the cross.

it is called kennel blindness...some actually believe they have good dogs...I always say it in as few words as I can and it is for the in-experienced but mainly for those that have kennel blindness and it is this...Hunt your dog alone and if he strikes and bays and has the bottom to stick then he is a hog dog...if he can't do that then call him a me too dog because he is no better than that...

but me too dogs have a place in the pack if they contribute to stopping or catching hogs...

you are right...if both dogs are really good at what they do then the pups have a chance to make decent to great dogs with a few culls in the litter...it is up to the owner to select the best pups for hunting and not just for looks...

The dogs I'm talking about come from years are breeding the cat male is from my blood line i have been raising them for 11 years and the walker is from my grandfathers line he has been raising them for 30 years the reason i was asking bout the cross iss because the male dog is the last cat i own and the walker is the last gyp out of my grandfathers line i was thinking the cross would make a dog with lots of bottom and enough gritt to stop one not to worry if the are open

Man if you are happy with and confident in them dogs then rock and roll! sounds like they have been and will work out for you and hell if they don't at least you will be able to look back and say you gave it an honest shot. Best of luck with em!

I got one off of a buddys breeding. My pup is 8 months 1/2 Cat, 1/4 Walker, 1/4 GSP. !st trip in the woods he did as expected. Ran around my feet playing. Put him on the ground again this past saturday and he and my 1yr old parker went out with my grown dog 500, grown dog came back and they went out to 800. I had to pick them up but thats fine with me as long as they arent at my feet.

Swine-Stalker I'd rather have to go pick a dog up than have it at my feet any day

I got a bit off topic because of the other responses. Back to the topic, I have 2 Cat/ Walker crosses but I cant give you much info because I have not had them in the woods yet.

I have a buddy that bred his 1/2 cur 1/2 cat to a full walker female and they are
about 15 months now. There were 7 pups, 1 died, 4 of them are already hunting great,
the other 2 ain't done much yet. The 4 that hunt well all range out very far, 1000 yards or so, and
have already struck their own hogs on multiple occasions. They bay tight and are gritty on small hogs
and will catch on bigger hogs with the catch dogs. Hope that helps you some.
