Ear tags "livestock" to mark reliesed hogs

Ok folks. Had a thought. Instead of trying to put a mark on an ear, how bout livestock tag on the ear. Close to the skull so mabe it doesn't get ripped off. Anyone used this before. Pros and cons, good idea or bad. Don't raise cattle so not familiar with tagging livestock or how durable they will be. Any input?

In Colorado county TX you catch and release hogs you won't have land to hunt long !!!!!!!

Yep...I know of one place where a guy uses ear tags. Doesn't mean much...hog leaves his property...it's still fair game.

We used to hunt off the river as kids by boats. All the big leases that couldn't be hunted bordered this particular river.
Back then we could run feral hogs through the auction ring and maybe get $15 a head on the bigger ones.

In return the big leases were buying up all the feral hogs....stocking their lands. Just so happened ..they didn't take the auction tags out before releasing them.

Sooooooo. We would catch them...cut the tags out........and re sell them back to the same clubs that had already bought them.  Haha.....Dang good gig for several years.   Paid for my dog box and a bunch of boat gas....

Got to the point we were seeing a hog with several holes from previous tags.  Hehe

I don't think them ear tags is what keep the cattle on the property, I believe its the fences, so the effects of the ear tag and the hog crossing property lines and being fair game not related

I was thinkin that low in the ear would low for less chance for limbs n such to grab and pull the tag out. im fixin to shoot some low in the ear and hope they hold.

   that's what we need a bunch of ear tagged hogs running loose so the tpwd and the tahc could have proof positive that feral hogs were being caught and released . then we can all deal with the even more stricter transport and holding laws that would follow . doggers already catch all the blame when hogs show up where they have never been seen before .   

  the tags will stay in the ear when placed properly , but at what cost ? they are required to tag when released onto the big tahc approved game ranches if I'm not mistaken .

   you can buy you some ear notchers at the feed store and make quick work out of marking hogs and a lot less noticeable to those that matter .   think ahead boy's and girl's we are still fighting every day [ well some of us are ] to keep doing what we are doing   .     OFF MY SOAP BOX FOR NOW   LOL !!!!!!

Im sure they would hold ok.  I like to mark them just to carry on a dying tradition.

   and on another note . they make a small especially for pork ear tag that is low profile and wouldn't hang up on brush  .  but I still say just notch them .

Thanks for sticking with the subject Charles, I was thinking low would work best too. I just wanted something to talk about when the idea came across, didn't want to piss folks off about government issues. Just thought it would be cool around here since atleast 30 people are running pigs in my little town. Be cool to see where they would migrate to or choose to stay even under pressure. Marking is what we do now and we saw a knotch just like ours but wasn't a pig we caught.

NOW. Is there tips to making a mark original, and won't look like dozens before?

Isn't know they made a ear notching tool, sounds simple enough. Thanks for the input, and I assure you that I wouldn't want to do anything that would put negative light on doggin of any kind,  halfbreed.

What about cut both ears and tail off? That's a good way to mark them. If it's 30 people from your town hunting them it won't be long before you start hearing about where them boars are at.

Bo, if I'm reading your post right are you saying cut both ears off. If you do that then your catch dog will have heck next time he's caught and also hog hunters will get the blame that the hogs ears were chewed off and it will still be a negative .

It's more for thinning the competition down...it's a practiced art in some areas and is a double edged sword but that's how it goes!

He just said he wanted to be able to keep up with them a little better. You better believe if people go to getting on rank boars with no ears he will be hearing all about where they was hunting and all details but it works both ways not really a good practice to use on your local hunting area
