Monkey....gone but never forgotten! RIP

I hardly ever get on the site anymore as I don't know anyone here anymore. But had a few minutes and thought I would post something so the few on here that do know me will know me and Monkey are still alive!

Monkey will be 10 years old this year, my how time flies. Been a real good dog for me but, like me, is starting to slow down some. Here are some pics from a few recent hunts.

Ol Monkey still looks good even at 10 years old, and looks like you're still catching good hogs.

A dog that can do it solo, find, bay, and then catch and make it to 10 years old is gotta have something special between his ears.

Good to hear from you Mark, I still want to get you on a hunt with me over here in citrus when you get some time. Show you Tarbaby and her daughter Pearl in the woods. We have caught 37 since January 1st. And there is a whole lot more to be caught.bring your two monkey daughters and we will have some second and third generation monkey dogs on the ground catching pork. You end up keeping any of them males out of their last litter?

Thanks guys. Yeah old Monkey is a pretty good dog. He doesn't walk on water but has found a pile of hogs for me.. in front of..and behind...other dogs. I mainly hunt him alone or with one young dog (the red dog baying with him in the above pic is one of his daughters). I no longer turn him out with other peoples dogs as if he thinks he has help, he will catch some hogs he shouldn't. Almost got him wrecked a few times by someone turning in a wanna be catch dog that rushed in like it was going to catch, didn't, but then Monkey did and got hurt. Lots of times it's just me and him in the woods.

I do have a couple young dogs that I need to have in the woods. Have a ringneck dog I call Crash that I have hopes for but he is going to be ROUGH! He might not have a real long life expectancy.......

But when you only hunt now and then, and it's take young dogs and maybe not catch anything, or take Monkey and stand a good chance of catching hogs....well...lets just say the young dogs don't get the hunting they should! At least not yet. I keep saying I am going to leave Monkey at home and hunt them, just hard to do!

Don't have any good pics of Crash, but this is him. Year old and never been hunted...YET! But he does sort of like a hog...a little... Grin

And then there is Spot the Wonder Dog!  Afro Believe it or not, he and Crash are littermates....

How has Spot shaped up as far as a hog dog? Does he work a hog like most of your dogs? Just curious since hes a throwback to some earlier generations if he does things alittle different?

LOL...poor Spot. He is like the Rodney Dangerfield of hog dogs...he gets no respect..... Grin

Spot is an odd dog. He has a very different personality...kind of quirky. Not near as rough around a hog as Crash. I have only messed with them twice but Spot seems more of a loose baying type dog. Crash is much more like my old dogs, maybe bark 1-2 times then its a caught hog.

But if Spot can ever get his legs all going the right direction I bet he can cover some ground! Hope to start messing with them more now that deer season is over...work allowing.

Still have never had either on a hog in the woods.

crackerc, I know exactly what you mean about it being hard to leave your ace at home, it took me gettin my two best dogs wrecked in back to back weekends to finally step back and say "alright, time for these pups to start earnin their feed." I have been pretty pleased overall with how my youngins are doing (thankfully lol)

Best of luck in the future with ol monkey, like BA-IV said above, its obvious that your monkey dog is pretty special to be a 10yr old one dog show still in the woods!

Put that Spot dog over JJ, or any other of your proven rough females, let her ween the pups, and at 8 weeks, I'll pay you what you want for the whole litter. Any dogs that don't work, I'll either bring back to you personally or cull them, it will be your call. They will be given "every" opportunity to make hands before they are a year old, by someone who knows how to use a good cur dog Wink

Everyone I appreciate the replies. Old Monkey has been a good dog for me and is smarter than a lot of people I know..... Grin

Warren, I appreciate the kind offer but I never breed a dog until I have hunted it a few years to see what it can do. That way I can try to breed it to something to correct what faults it has, and they all have them. Just some have more faults than others!

JJ is the dam to Spot & Crash and her half brother Otis is the sire. So breeding Spot back to his mother would be a little too close for me. His family tree doesn't have many branches now!

That spot dog has the look a lot of my old curs had. Long, leggy, that "saddle" back, and of course that block head.
