This same thing happened to me on that toothy barr i posted travis. I dropped dogs tho, wont do it again. 1 of my dogs got left on the river cuz it wasnt their dog, really was POed about that. I didnt get all the info either before i got there, so, my fault. If i run with someone elses dogs, i kinda feel like they are my responsibility also. Whether thats right or wrong, its how i feel. Got told he was probably chewin on a dead hog and he will come back, turned out he was caught on a different one. I feel ur frustration!!

To many people and dogs there, but to go after them would of been Cool! Peach i've got a 3000 acre place in Carrizo I have access to, but I havent hunted it yet. Is there a good bit of hogs over there in that area.

i have always had bad luck hunting with a big crowd and dogs like that, it always seems like its one or two dogs run a hog for several hours the rest of their dogs are just riding and hanging out at the four wheelers. and just when they get him bayed the other people haul a$$ over there and open the box and usually hog breaks or cuts the only 2 dogs that ran him for 4 hours and did the work. but they dont care because they have a picture of a big hog they say they caught lol. i would of been pissed or just left all my dogs at the truck and been a tag along

I'm a lil different I guess I will do things some times for giggles. Now with u having a place to go that was close that's probly what I woulda done as well. If I had went on to the place I woulda had no plans of dropping a dog. I woulda just rode and watched the show till they got mad and left then I woulda hunted.

the last big hunt i went on it was a dissaster and i still get mad thinking about it. we met up with a man one morning and there was some more guys there with dogs that was invited also, no big deal we will just take turns or whatever, we pull up to a wallow and its a big hog track had been there pretty fresh these guys were pumped and let their dogs loose well they fooled areound a few minutes and come back, so we let ours loose and about 3 miles later they had him bayed, they guys hauled tail over there and got within 200 yards or so and opened the box, when i pulled up i could see a pile of dogs baying and they was hollering he has killed the bulldog, i looked for a minute and seen their bulldog baying with a good gash down his side but he was going to live, we caught the hog and got him tied and loaded and went on hunting, we got to noticing that the jag never showed back up, well she was laying back over there where we had caught the hog dead as four oclock, when them boys sent all them dogs to them they thought it was time to catch and their dogs just really wasnt that commited and the jag got killed, and have seen it several more times that dogs get cut down or killed because of that right there, and its always going to be a dog that cant hardly replaced.

That would stink. I have hunted with a wad of dogs a few times. Most of them I never turned mine out. Got asked to bring my Kane dog on one hunt that burned my tail. We dropped dogs including Kane and they all made a loop. My Kane dog and 2 others worked to the left around 300. The boy I went withs dog and 4 others went to the right. The 2 with Kane came back after a couple minutes and Kane showed treed at 600. With Kane treed means caught. I told the others and they said they were waiting on their dogs. I went to Kane and he had lost the hog before I got there. I saw a big boar cross the road before I caught him crossing. They finally come up and I have Kane loaded up. He has several new cuts in his vest and they got smart. I told them what it was and left Kane in the box. He was my only dog at the time and if I couldn't count on back up I wasn't gonna run him. Since then I leave mine up until everyone else is done.

I believe I had " the right attitude"... I am a hog hunter and don't need to prove anything. I hunt my dogs a certain way and that is the only way I will hunt them. Too many people, too many dogs and too many buggies is just not my way.
I agree...as there are different styles of hunting as there are certain ways that bring out the best in a dog... |

Sounds like you did the right thing to me. I don't hunt with many people, but the guys I do hunt with, our dogs hunt real good together. I wouldn't let my dogs with someone's else's dogs that I do not know, sounds like a good way to lose some good dogs.

Well from the sounds of it the guys that did stay caught 4 1/2 hogs all weekend. So i surely didnt miss much. I sure figured at least one of the people that went to barrier's ranch would be a member on this site.

I think you might have enjoyed yourself this past weekend - it seems a lot of misconceptions are present here. Indian Mound Ranch is 4400 acres of High Fenced land that has been in the family since the early 80's - since that time hog dogs have been invited out at least 5 times a year. I believe we all realize that corrizo springs can take a toll on dogs - as such multiple groups are asked to come out so that dogs dont run more than once a weekend. Everyone gets all you can eat (its a working Quail Farm) roasted and grilled quail - venison and the kicker - all you can drink for three days. you run your dogs for one day or evening and you decide when they are hot, when they are done and where you will work - there are plenty of recommendations on where to run them but the owner of the dogs has final say. The other hog doggers whose dogs are at the ranch house, come along for the ride and help out. if you want a few of your dogs working together than you discuss that and decide between yourselves. as far as cluster goes??? there's no such thing there - everyone arrives and signs the waivers, then the customers who are invited to hunt go through a short orientation regarding sticking pigs and dog safety - no customer can posses a firearm for the dogs safety - dog handlers are in charge - no running with blade out... that sort of thing. It is the most organized hunts i have ever been on. This forum is designed to allow like minded people to chit chat and share experiences... that's exactly what you missed out on this weekend. we don't care that we only stuck a few pigs - we drove around we ran at a relaxed pace we told stories and shared tips about running hogs with dogs. we enjoyed watching the dogs work and we let the dogs rest a day before the handler decided if they could or would hunt another day. Also you drove 5.5 hours expecting something and so did we - you committed to coming this past weekend and without asking questions you saw something you didn't like and you took off. that forced us to go at a more relaxed pace because we would be using dogs again on Sunday since we didn't have 3 crews this weekend. also - at the restaurant you said "i already have a plan B" - that's either thinking ahead, or you didn't plan on coming anyhow - I hope you get the opportunity to go again, i think you and your dogs might have had a blast. but timing is everything in this world -

Well I'm from 50 mile south of Abilene I drove 61/2 hour 2 year in a row. And tool a little pack of yeller dogs. And had a hell of a time both times. great cooking. all the quail u could eat - fish, shrimp, orsters. Pork tenderloin , beef. Tenderloin. All u can drink. Of whatever u want. The best think. Was meeting new hunting buddy's. So with all that I dout u get invited back. ur loss

Well as far as plan b goes.. i did have one set up with Jesse Paul. I felt like something was fishy with this whole deal. I was never told of any other hunters being involved in this hunt. So to get blindsided by all of the dogs and people made me very uneasy. I dont do well with big crowds and neither do my dogs. Matthew. All that is fine and dandy, if that is the way it is down there always i doubt i will ever make that drive again invited or not  not a loss for me... i was asked to bring my dogs down because the guy supposedly had a bad hog problem. Lol.. this is surely not the case. I am glad yall had a great time. And if by colby and I taking our 6 lil pups out of the equation made it rough on yall i apologize but i highly doubt i did from the number of dogs i saw on the trailers. Cajunl that's what I'm thinking as a read this.
I like to hunt with my tight group of friends but hell sometimes I want to see what my dog will do along side your dogs. And I'll high five yah when we flip him.

I went on that hunt twice, spring of 2011 and 2012 I think. Anyway, there are great accommodations and even better food. We caught some hogs, though not a ton in relation to how much we hunted, both years, but yes our dogs from our post oak country took a whipping in the brush country. However, both years we went we knew each group that were bringing dogs and everyone worked well together. The family and their employees were great hosts to both the dog teams and their own customers. Could I catch more hogs in home area, yes. But the hunt with a fun group of guys was what the weekends were about to me.
