This is a daily topic at and around my house with my hunting buddies, and my boys, 6 and 11. They are both hardcore hunters, any game that presents itself. They prefer hog hunting with dogs, but have no prejudice against coon, squirrel, opossum, feral cat, etc. Now back to the better dogs...I have gotten to the point that I am close to pleased with my dogs, but I can't be more unhappy with the boys' dogs. I've been trying to get the boys a decent squirrel dog. What an adventure it's been! And we still don't have one worth feeding! I am open to any ideas or suggestions to help my boys get a decent dog. Jody, what bout a russle or a chussle (chawawa(sp)) crossed with a jack russle? Both them r great squirrel dogs. Unless ur looking for a hog/squirrel dog, then them ankle biters wont work to good for ya.  |

Allen , westTexascurs , has a litter that's going to drop next month. He said they will tree. Not sure if you want a pup or not .

Ankle biters are great. I know my curs will tree, the great grandfather to a pair of my pups would tree squirrels, hunt and bay cows, and hunt a hog. So I'm not opposed to a cur either, just haven't raised a litter in a couple years. I had a fiest years ago and she was just too ruff, for my son was too young at the time. if you want a good squirrel dog then you might want to try a fiest or a mt cur...the UKC forum is a good place to start looking

I've raised treeing fiest for years. Still have my original male dog (14 years old now) and in my opinion there isn't a better squirrel dog out there. I had a mountain curr once that was ok, but she turned out to be a much better coon dog than squirrel. Right now I have a curr mix female that is a great squirrel dog, just wish I knew what the other part of the "mix" was, so I could raise more just like her.  . |

I got a mt cur pup off a brother of mt dude that ain't working on hogs turn him lose in a big pen with other pups baying and he goes to checking trees might make a squirrel dog I'm going to cull him cause he shows no interest in hogs but if someone wants to try him on squirrels they can have him he will range out a hundred yards or so and come back

Ruben has never as of late been a fan of the smaller Mt curs but the man Brian is suggesting puts solid tree dogs on the ground regularly. Good honest man. |

I had one of the first CSD's and competed with her with great success. The name came from Calvin having a sign on his kennels that said "cajun squirrel dogs" that's how that came up with the name for the cur/feist cross dogs. |

I have been to Altons place several times in years past and he has some good squirrel and coon dogs and he likes them exactly a different style than what I like...  he gave me a top of the line squirrel dog that was a treeing machine and she was exactly what I liked in a Kemmer...she was leggy and stream lined and as nice looking of mt cur I have seen and she took to hogs like a duck takes to water...exactly what I like in a cur but not what Alton liked...she was given to him and he needed the space so I lucked out on that deal...but that is what makes the world go round...it is a good thing the good lord made us all different or this old world would be in trouble... if I were in the market for a squirrel dog I would get one from him...he is a dog man thru and thru...and honest as already mentioned... |
