So.... I was fortunate to know a few right people who steered me right in the hog hunting hobby. Unfortunately for a buddy of mine, he's gone out an bought expensive "started" dogs an they end up just started on baying a hog in a pen, an his time for training these dogs is not a whole lot. So he came to me an asked what should he do.... So I told him, that outta all honesty, it would be best to get rid of the started dogs, wait a while save some extra pocket, an purchase 2 finished or damn near finished dogs, or just simply give it up an ride with me like he had been doing for the past 3 yrs. He hasn't called since we spoke, was I wrong going at him the way I did!

Maybe you could help him out with a dog since you know the right people.

Steer him in the right direction if he is serious about getting into it. Depending on how many started dogs he purchased, he could keep them and just save and get one good strike dog which could help get the others well rounded. Never no, one of those started dogs with some good handle and training could steal the spotlight and make a dog.

I could have steered him right, but the person who put my head straight in the game, now watches over me when we hunt, don't have all the contacts uncle buck had. Most of the men are old school. But I will take the advice an see what we can get outt of it! Thanks guys.

You wouldn't be a good friend if you didn't tell him what you thought, honestly. I've been called out by my friends and I've called out friends. Sometimes it's hard to hear stuff like that but it's the right thing to do. IMO

Some of these greenhorns don't want to listen to the ones that have been there and done that... let 'em waste their time and money and learn the hard way.

I agree with you, it is what it is and sometimes it takes a buddy saying it to make you open your eyes, it has worked both ways for me in the past as well.

Is this young man wanting started wood dogs or just finished woods? Maybe you could of helps his dogs some on mock hunts.. but if that's me I would help him and give him a dog that's striking. So yes he needs a friend in crime to hunt and guide him even thou he thinks he knows everything...

If I had good dogs and a friend that hunted with me had done the same and asked the same I woulda said bring them when we run and we will put them on the ground and try to get them going.
My dogs when I started were at best what his are. It has taken lots of trips and lots of time but they will all find and bay hogs. Now I do catch them grey pigs from time to time and still run a deer here and there but I catch hogs also. I did this with only occasional runs with proven dogs . Not everyone can lay the money on the table to buy good proven dogs. If I'm looking at over 1500 to 2000 bucks on the table it's going to bills not dogs. A couple hundred is easier to come up with.

I would say bring the pups along every time your dogs hunted... They are started and are never gonna be finished if you dont put them on PORK. BOTTOM LINE EVERY DOG STARTED AS A PUP

The way I read what you said was kinda arrogant every one has to start some where at every thing we do a kind understanding friend is easier to take then a hard ass not saying you where just saying and I know first hand. Just call him and say lets help each other and move forward for the dogs sake lol hard to give up on things you pay a lot of cash on if you ain't got much

I'm with Mike... You'll either make some good choices and get lucky finding some decent dogs to start out, or you'll get you a couple dogs, hunt the piss out of em, and make em dogs yourself. If you tried to tell him, and he didn't want to listen let him learn the hard way. Lots of folks will get into this and not make the cut when they realize how much time and effort it takes to make decent dogs. It's definitely not all fun and games, but the prize at the end of the tunnel is well worth the effort.

Still a question and it is different reading txt than knowing the actual way u told him. Did u not like his dogs at all, did they mess your dogs up, did they have any hunt or is he or you the one that dont have the patience to train more dogs?
