It's a crap shoot. The vast majority are bred to be pets and showdogs. Mine included.

Sean's right... some have game sense and drive, some don't. Lonewolf is also right. There are exceptions, but in general they are not rangy. Most are silent on track. Almost all will put teeth on a hog to stop it. Beyond that, some have a decent voice and will back up and bay while others are grittier and will catch... again, it varies a lot from dog to dog.
I sent you a PM.

my exper is very slow to mature, dog aggression, make ok help dog but not enough grit to be real catch dog or enough bottom to be a true lead dog..........but my exper is with older dogs someone else was passing off. A 4 yr old would be hard to start I would think, may have to many problems to get them worked out at his age; just may not be worth the time you would put in for what the end product would be. Some times it comes down to the bottom line, is it worth it?

I have several young ridgebacks and they are out performing my BMC pups. My main interest is their heat tolerance. I think that if you want ridgebacks you must find a good hunting line not show dogs.

Despite the large amount of pet breeding the two i have hunted behind from mccoy and muleman were out standing at stopping and catching runners defiantly a place for them in any pack, lots of heart and gritt!

I hunted a ridgeback/cur cross for a while. Strike/bay/catch, very gritty dog. Haven't hunted no full blooded ridgebacks though.

Been around one ridgback. It was mean toward other dogs and wouldn't even look at a hog. But this is just one dog.
