Sounds like he'll be OK. If it is bleeding real bad feed him a little calf liver.

just about every cut I leave open...Cut heal 2 or 3 times a day will be the topical I use and an antibiotic capsule one in the morning and one in the evening if 250 mils...or one 500 mil capsule a day...it is ok to stitch or staple if you want but make sure to leave the low side open so it can drain...

Agree with rueben. Leave it open, rinse it out a couple a times a day, antibiotics, in 2-3 weeks, u wont hardly notice a scar.

Is it bright red blood?  Up under the jaw is very vascular.  If its arterial, it would have been squirting, more than likely. Venous is an ooze, that'll drip and make someone that's unfamiliar worried. Usually, if it's venous , it'll stop , but allotta times, on a cut like your talking about, the tissue will, ooze clear,, or watery bloody discharge.for quite a while til granulation tissue gets going good.  But if it has you worried at all, and no improvement, it's worth a visit to the vet.

bright red is arterial. his coradid (sp) may have a slight puncture. when he is out running around, his heart is beating fast, and the the artery aint healed enough to take the blood pressure. the knot is more than likely a combo of swelling in the area from the cut, and blood being forced out through the lil hole in his artery.

i would stop letting him run around, every time he does, the clot breaks apart and opens the hole back up. leave him in his kennel, keep him hydrated, keep his wound clean and doctored, and keep feed for him and let him rest.

it aint gonna stop till the nicked artery heals its self, or u can take him to the vet and have the vet put a couple dissolving sutures on the artery. but even the vet will tell u to stop letting him run around.

if ur neck artery was nicked and u were pumping bright red blood, the docs would tell u to lay up for a while till the wound heals.

A artery or vain spurts blood in a pumping action u can see, if  the wound is dripping , and u are cleaning with water. I would get some stop bleed u use on dehorning cattle and pack the cut , u might have to hold pressure with ur finger on it for a few minutes. The bleeding will stop, be careful cause u have to make sure u keep the wound clean so a secondary infection will not set up from this action. I normally leave it packed for 24 hours to make sure it has stopped bleeding. Then rinse with water 3 times a day till healed.
