I have a buddy of mine that turns at least 10 to 15 dogs loose on a hunt. What do you experiend hunters think about this. All responses are welcome. Im just curious?  |

One cur dog.
Almost impossible to train dogs like that, but I like to have a couple young dogs and one or two older dogs. Much more and I have chewed up hogs, and i hate chewed up hogs.

Me an the 2 guys I hunt with most of the time usually bring one dog a piece so we hunt with 3 dogs on the ground an one or 2 lead in bulldogs all our stuff is loose like said above I don't like a chewed up hog

Like said above , 4 maybe a pup or two , and when I say four this is a handful because the four I'm talking about on hogs will get you strung out on bays for miles and in every direction , all very independent , I couldn't imagine having 15 of this type of dog on the ground , with this many dogs it would also be almost impossible to brake bad habits or to figure out in most cases who is the leading culprit of the bad habit , iv seen were you have a great PAC of dogs ,no problems and bring one in the group and now there all bumping deer , it just takes one bad apple in the heat of excitement to screw up the group , one so called rough dog with no a$$ to get your whole loose pack cut to pieces , I'm very picky when it comes to letting dogs hunt in my group , but as for me 15 dogs would be total chaos

3 dogs maybe 4 if s**t hits the roof. A good friend of mind runs a huge pack of hounds and it just seems crazy to me. But he's running bobcat & yotes on horse back.

It only takes one good dog to find and stop a hog, and lead a good catch dog! I like to run a adult dog with the next young up and comer, then lead a bulldog just in case you need the extra catch!!

My buddy takes 8 plus dogs when he hunts it's a big cluster most of the time I like 2 to 4 myself

if a person were to judge according to internet videos and hunting pics, i would think any number under 5 would be an unpopular answer on this thread...
kidding aside, i like no more than two older dogs and a young one on the ground.

Depends on what you're trying to do... If you're trying to train pups that are ready for the big woods then it's nice to have a couple of dogs that know what they're doing out there to show some pups what to do. If you're trying to just catch hogs then your best dog and a CD should be able to do the job. If you're asking how many do you HAVE to take to catch a hog, then one is the answer. We have two dogs in our crews that are one out dogs. The ideal situation for me is two good strike dogs and two good CDs. That way in case there is split bays you can split up and catch both hogs. JMO

I generally take 3 or 4 dogs total. 1 or 2 grown dogs and 2 young dogs.

Yes sir....it CAN be done with one good strike and bay dog (that will help catch) and a CD.
If you hunt alone sometimes....that's the easiest way....only a couple dogs to handle.

1 Finished strike dog and 1 catch dog Is all you need .. any more finish dogs i would be hunting dogs then hogs. Sometimes a started Pup is best hunted alone.
