Preacher is still young (especially for a Hound) at just under 2 years old. He started real slow...never cared about a pig in a pen. I started hauling him to the woods at 10 months. At a year the switch flipped. At around 13 months he struck his own. Now he's doing a pretty fair job for me.
He is short range, out to 250 or so just hunting. If he hits something he's interested in I've seen him get on out 500-700 before he checks back in.
I wouldn't consider him rough...he'll bay fairly loose till help gets there and then tighten up. I say this because he holds a bay by himself very well and when the pig is caught by just the curs he's been on the ear several times when I get there...that tells me he tightens up when he gets back up.
I think the thing I grown to like the most about him is that he has lots and lots of bottom. Once he's seen the pig (I.e. The bay breaks) I'm pretty confident he'll come bayed again. He's stuck with runners for up to 2.5 miles....more than that...I can't say....that's the farthest I've had a hog run with him on the hunt.
The Dam to the pups is a tree gyp on Robert Whitten's yard. I know she'll bark at a pig. When I had here here breeding her...I let her out of the kennel into the dog yard and she went to the fat fence and started baying a couple I had in a pen. That's all I know about her.
Pups can't be registered.
