Never really been around either one too much. Just wondering what's the difference and why ones chosen over the other. I'd like a horse or 2......but if I have one specifically to use for huntin- shouldn't I consider a mule.
Wheeler n rangers are nice....just wondering how the old timers do it!

A mule is a cross of a horse and donkey (not trying to insult your intelligence by stating what is used to make a mule), but depending on how the cross was made, u will get 1 with more horse characteristics, or more donkey characteristics. The benefit to the mule is, u got the best of both. Heavy load carrying of the ass, and power and speed of the horse. They can babe a lil more stubborn than a horse, but once broke, are a better ride and hunting/shooting platform than either the ass or horse as an individual. I can't remember the name of the mule with more horse features, but I think it's a henny, but I could be wrong on the name. But if it were me, I would opt for the horse like mule. It will have a higher hands, which make them a better fence leaps than the shorter mule, have more get up and go off the line and on top end than the shorter mule. My dad had a mule that was half quarter horse, was as tall as the quarter, and had the speed of the quarter. Enough so, my dad wasn't ready for it and it threw him, braking his shoulder and shoulder blade, along with several ribs. An old hickory club fixed that the nxt time my dad climbed aboard him 6 months later. He knocked that outa the gate speed out of Toby and he calmed and didn't wanna run after that, just walk or a shallow gate.

We've been talking a lot about mules! Are there different breeds of donkey? I've seen some pretty tall before. Or are they all just the same?

There's different breeds of donkeys, but alot if the different sizes you see in the mules come from what ever breed of horse there out of

Just in my experience, mules make better hunters overall. Now and again you get a horse that is the best there is to hunt off of, but mules are more laid back, can pack heavy loads, can tackle steep terrain better, and are better at jumping fences and debris.

When you go to buy a horse or a mule, have the owner ride them first & have him pick up all four of their feet. No need to have a nightmare waiting to happen. Most mules can out walk a horse unless it is a gaited horse. A really good mule is a pleasure to ride & so is a horse. Stay away from green horses & mules.
The correlation between horses & boats are very similar. A boat is nothing but a hole in the water in which you constantly pour money into & that fits horses & mules.
Depending on how much pasture you have, you will be looking at buying hay & feed, plus regular farrier visits. The cheapest part of a horse or mule is the initial purchase price. Good luck.

what about a jackass, my buddy has a mammoth jack and he looks like he would be fun to ride. and easy to hunt off of, i have never been around horses to much either so no nothing about a jack ass

the best part about a mule is he's alot smarter and tougher than a horse . the worst part about a mule is he's alot smarter and tougher than a horse ! lol a good horse would be alot easier to find and alot cheaper , besides , them mule people are weird  |

Its hard to beat a good horse,thats the only way we hunted for yrs,wen its hot there kinda a pain,but when its cool,i can ride right up to a bay,iam up high i can watch dogs,and if i wont i can shake a loop out and rope off the horse.it beats walking .a true woods horse always has a place at my house.in the winter u need hay,good feed they need wormed,have drag a lot hogs out by the tail of a horse.

I ain't seen a reply form some people I know do know. I looked into them too. I like the mule. But most mules will not jump over stuff from what I have been told. It goes to them being smart enough to know that they do not know what is on the other side. but if you got one that would jump stuff that would be really good. I have seen a mammoth donkey and they are big but still a donkey in behavior from what I was told. Mules are what really won the west. But they sure are not cheap. I do wish some of the people that have them in their yards would reply. They were nice enough to answer all my dumb questions.

I've owned both. Had two damn good mules.but it's hard to beat a good horse. Good horse is eaiser to find than a good mule.dont let no one fool u a horse is as tuff as ne mule out there.i only ride In the mountains to. A horse will go ne were a mule can go trust me.
