Well had a dog pass tonight. Currently in Korea gettin a rig ready on my rotation and get a bunch of missed text from my wife. She let the dogs out of there kennels in a fenced off yard for them like always. The cat that passed and a young cur (1yr) have been battling on and off for dominance. So my wife switched there kennels so they were away from each other yesterday. Appears the cat may of been choked by her nylon collar from the pics of how she found her. Has anyone had any experiences of this? Now I need to figure out the plan for this young dog. She usually was not the one to initially start the fights, for all I know it could of been horseplay gone too far? Do you all leave your dogs collars on, I always have just incase they were to get off the property somehow? Thoughts on what u would do?

I would leave collars on... I leave them to where IF THEY HAVE TO , they will get come off the collar.

I used too. My male hung himself a couple years ago tryin to get to one of my gyps. Luckily the rest of the dogs went nutts when he started floppin around and I got out there just in time. Now none of them wear collars in the pen.

My dogs are NEVER without a collar that has my name and phone # on it. Can they possibly hang themselves, yes. But they escape or get out of the pen more often. Then you want them to be found.

Always have my name and num on a collar around there neck.chances you have to take,if gets out mine are gone hunting.

No collars when penned, for me , too risky for hanging and i pen male and female together, so they will eventually chew collars off anyway. When loading for a run, they get garmins and dayglo collars with ID on them. I think you'll find eceryone has there own system in place based on the their particular needs and past experiences

My kennels have a roof, so I dont worry about a dog hanging themself-but, if I didnt have a roof, I may look into some breakaway type collar. There may not be such a thing as a breakaway collar, but there may be a material out there that has a low breaking strengh so that if a dog did hang them self, it would break. You could then use the regular dayglow and put it on a dog when they are out of the kennel. Just a thought! I actually thought of the idea while reading this post. I umpire baseball during the summer and kids are now wearing breakaway necklaces. The leagues allow it becuase the necklace has two magnets that connect. The breaking strength is very low.
Im not sure magnet would work on a dog collar- everything the dog scratches thier neck- the collar would probably come off.

i never take their collars off unless their cut somewhere the collar might aggravate the cut like aroun the neck. but more often then not a dog will get loose and you need some forn of identification on the dog. if its a young dog or puppys i dont put collars on them just because i know if they do get loose they are not going to be to far away from my kennel. but a good dog always needs to have a collar on

Just to clarify, the dog didn't get caught on the kennels, I have the doc bob kennels with the roof so that isn't an issue. It looks like she went to attack the young dog (shes got some minor cuts on her face) and the young dog got a hold of her collar on the back of her neck. I don't know if she may of twisted while the cur had a hold and it choked her or what? Found out through my wife that the young dog is in heat. She shouldn't of been let out with the other ones if that was the case, but she didn't know. I've never had them fight serious outside the kennels, little bit through the kennel fencing but nothing major. Just doesn't really seem that easy for the young dog to do and doesn't add up to me, im stumped?
