some folks are totally against it and others believe in it...I totally believe in it when done properly...there is a balance as to how much is right just like in the laws of mother nature...a very simple example is water for hydration...too much and the extreme is that we will drown and with the opposite we die from thirst...but the right amount works wonders for us...to many good reasons to list...when we have the good fortune of hunting 2 or 3 times a week it is not as important to use a bay pen...but it would can still be a helpful tool...

Some positives;

my observation is that the pup gains confidence when allowed to work in the pen...he knows that you are proud when he does right and he sees your excitement and that in itself will cause the pup to step it up...

the pup gains a ton of confidence by learning how to stop a hog and how close he can get without meeting the snout end of the hog...

The pup learns what game you want...

done correctly and the pup learns to respect a hog and what distance to keep and when...

Some negatives;

bay too long and too often and the pup will lose interest...

let the pup dominate a pig in the pen and he will lose respect and will meet more than his match in the woods one day... and he may not live over it...

put the pup in with too big a pig too early and the pup will lose confidence and could possibly be ruined and hurt...might need to wait until the pup matures some and also use other dogs kin the pen with the pup to keep the heat off...

training can be easy by taking little opportunities here and there...like if the pup is coming towards you just call him to you...if the pup is running towards the pig to bay hiss/sic him on...use his momentum for training...the path of least resistance...keeping it simple...

Good information!  I just got a pup - he is 12 weeks - and I'm already thinking about the training.

I never had any big problem with a pen other that wat has already been said. Just have to know wen to pull them out. It could be the best thing in the world for a timid dog. Never used one much personally but nothing against it
