Ok so what's y'all's opinion does a bulldog hold a hog or does the hog stay to fight the bulldog? I personally think a bulldogs just a distraction for you to get a leg! I've seen hogs run with 2 bulldogs and neither of the 2 bulldogs were sorry by anymeans both over 60 lbs! Id you have any stories is also like to hear them! Thanks

I would like to think a good dog holds a hog. I don't like a dog to fight a hog. After they grab a ear they should be a long side of the hog controlling it. No shaking or anything like that.

Yes sir our bulldogs do exactly what you said I'm just asking if they think the hogs stays there to fight and try to whip the dogs or he can't run? Because an old timer I hunt with and me belive if hog wants to run with the bulldogs he will! Just seeing other hunters opinions!

I've seen 3 full grown dogos caught. 1 on each ear and 1 on the back of the neck. They are rather tall dogs that weight 80-100 pounds hunting weight. They make pretty good anchors.

A hog don't care if his nuts or ears come off a big hog will move on out if he can a few good dogs will most of the time stop that

I agree that 1 can be held to an extent but I belive a good hog (accesses 200+) can run if he wants too I've seen 2 bulldogs caught on a 245 lbs hog with 5 curs get drug thru the corn like its a dream!

Big difference in dogs that catches and dogs that put his nose in the dirt.    Can't explain it but some are in a different league and they will hold him.   If you ever have one like that you will know it, I've had a ton of dogs the would catch a hog but only one "catchdog" in my life.

Im not real sure how to answer- but I going to side with Oconee and here is why.  I've had two pretty decent catch dogs over the past few years, guess I've been lucky, I don't know.  The dogo I have now goes about 80 lbs; nothing real big.  He is not flashy in any way.  He actually runs at a pretty good pace to a bay and then pauses...then he simply catch on the ear.  He doesn't slam a hog, he doesn't walk or sprint to a bay- he just "gets the job done".  Ive had him on some pretty good hogs, some boars and some barrs, the biggest going up to about 325 (the second hog he ever saw).  I have seen a hog yet that he did handle pretty easily.  Ive watched him hold a couple hogs and he just ruens with the hog.  Ive seen him go backwards on a hog turning into him and Ive seen him move forward on a hog turning away from him.  Maybe he just hasn't met one of these "run off" hogs yet, but if I was a betting man, I would bet that a hog wont run off with him.

Ive been doing this long enough to know that nobody has "seen it all" and as soon as you think something wont happen it will.  As we talked about on another post, a man's pride is hard for a dog to live up to.  The next hog may very well run off with my dog, but I don't think so.  Im not going to say if there are "run off" hogs are not, but I am going to venture out a say that a really good catch dog that knows what he or she is doing, is probably not going to be ran off with.

Like I said, I may be wrong, but, if hogs were running off with my dogs more than once or twice, I think I may start looking for a different catchdog, because it is not suppose to happen that way.

Half the folks I know hunt nothing but a bunch of catching curs and they still have hogs get loose and vamanoos.  Grin

I really don't know the answer to you question but ill say that My catchdog isn't really all that good compared to some of y'all's but when I get there and finally send her, I'm coming in on her tail and catching that hog and most of the curs are catching to cover me these days.

I would venture to agree with judge peel. If that hag has the mind to run, he will run no matter what. The dog may or may not make the difference in fully controlling/holding the hog. Not saying nobodies dogs are not controlling the hog, but as to the ? of the op, if the hog has the intention to run, it is gone, dragging dogs off if the terrain is at the hogs advantage

This weekend I watched about a boar hog about 120 run my bulldogs nose into a tree and scraped him off, we caught the hog about 100 yards later! The hogs ear was split in 3 pieces so I know he did not let go! Just got me and my buddy to thinking if the hog was 100lbs heavier if he had 2 bulldogs and he wanted to run, what was gonna stop him if the ear only allows so much grip? Just a thought

I have seen a small cur do what 3 big one couldn't do I have seen  good bull dogs get walked over you can play it over and over but the fact is it ain't going to go to your way of thinking every time. A average group of dogs can do it most of the time but some time even the best can get it done.

I will say a smart BIG Hog will do whatever he wants... If he has been hunted before he will run like a sun of a gun and shake off anything in his way.. I have experienced it.
He was so big His poop looked like a burrito.. Lol

You run into hogs that will invite you into there house for a fight, you can hear them popping there teeth at you in the brush seen them kill dogs and stand on them and dare another to come on in close.but you get the rite dog anchored on his ears hes done looking for a way out.idont think they can run or they would

I think it depends on the hog. I have seen 1 dog keep one put. I have also seen the same dog get slung around like a rag doll while the hog was making his way at us like he wasn't concerned at all the dog was on him.

Let's consider the science of it... an animal that out weighs is adversary by 100-200 pounds wants to go... It's gonna go.
