Brad,
I've thought about doing the same thing. I am concerned that the rack on the front will limit the places I can go. I already barely make it down some trails and I think a rack on the front would impede my ability to cross some creeks.
I think I would put a rack on the front of mine, if it would mot make my ranger any longer. I just ride mine on the rack I build on top of my dog box.

Someone on here did one on a ranger. They built it over the hood. It was fixed so he could pull 2 pins and flip it up giving access to the under hood area.

A flat platform or even a rack can be built that won't extend to far past or at least be even with the front bumper and like shotgun said, could even be hinged and pinned, or just pinned for frontal access. Platform would be the easiest to build, but it's all up to the imagination on what to build

Charles my ranger has one built over the hood that pins. It's made out of square tubing and plywood. Them I covered it with the rubber belts off of a round bale baler. It has a diamond patern that keeps their feet from slipping and I refuse to put a rail around the front like others do.

That belting works great. I used that for roofing on dog house many yrs ago. A guy i hunt with had a rack similar in what ur talking bout muleskinner. He made his out of angle with plywood and plastic expnded "metal" for traction and used adel clamps to secure it to the front bumper n bolts to the window frame n had a plexi windscreen. I would say less than $50 in rack material
When i build my rear rack for my wheeler, i used lite weight expanded steel n covered it with outdoor carpet and pro-seal for my adhesive. That seal if high heat n cold resistant n highly water and pertoleum proof.
A good imagination is endless on ideas and cost savings.

I have had 3 with racks and about 5 buddies with racks and have never seen one limit somewhere it could of gone if it didn't have one. Just use same width and length and you will be fine. The best ways to do it if your skills are limited is use a rear atv rack and make some brackets. One of my favorites was my buddies with a rear drop rack for a fourwheeler on the front. One of the cheaper ways is buy a rear cargo rack for a truck. They are really cheap and just lay you a piece of rubber in it for the dogs.
