Training a started dog

I hunt curs and have recently decided to take on a hound.. He is a redtick and is doing fairly good to me, but one problem I'm havin with him is once I have caught a hog and have it loaded on the atv he will not leave it alone keeps biting and baying at the atv. He will not go back hunting once it's on the atv that is his only concern is the hog on the atv I have whipped him with a switch and and tried to walk him off in the woods away from the atv but he goes rite back to it and bays some more.. I'm considering putting a shock collar on him and try that but he has only been hunted 3 times so far I just got him I don't want him to think he isn't supposed to fool with a hog at all u no so what's y'all's opinions?

Sounds like you have a good young prospect. If he has only been hunting 3 times, there is a good chance that more exposure to a few multiple hog hunts will help him tremendously. It is not unusual for a young dog to get over excited and become fixated on the first game they bay or tree. Matter of fact, it is a common problem with young hounds wanting to go back to trees in the coon hunting world. We just have to find his off switch and teach him to transition back to hunting after the catch.

I would recommend petting him up real good immediately after pulling him off the hog. He has to learn that once the hog has been legged, this round is over and the hog now belongs to you as the pack leader. Take whatever corrective measures that you feel are appropriate to stop him from barking or biting the hog any longer AFTER the hog is legged. This behavior can have negative affects on your other dogs and screw a hunt up in a hurry. I wouldn't worry if he mills around for a while and doesn't go back to hunting immediately.You might consider putting him in the box with a no bark collar until the other dogs get another hog started. Maybe that will get his attention refocused and you can cut him into the race/bay. (After you remove the no bark, don't ask me how I know!)

You might also try getting 2 hogs and putting together a couple of multiple hog mock hunts to help him along.

As a rule, hounds are slower learners, more stubborn, and less intelligent overall than curs. That same singularity of purpose and dogged determination to finish what they start are also the traits that make hounds so productive once they learn what they are doing!

Shotgun66 gave you some good info. The young dog sounds like he has the drive we all look for in a young dog! With time and exposure to more hunts/hogs he will settle down and get more focused to what you desire from him. My young curs are the same way. My 19mo old Blaze dog has to be broken off the hog and put on a tree like a bulldog till he calms down and he gets his praise and refocuses on me and not the hog! Good luck with your dog, he sounds like a very good prospect!

He is just hog crazy that's y he won't leave it alone if u can leave hem with ur buddy and take the hog to the truck or trailer and come back and then turn hem loose when u get back and let hem see there is no more hog on the atv it will make hem go looking for more hogs but he thinks that he is after the same hog I have had this happen with my hounds an easy fix no need in spank and shock

Ok thanx for the input everyone yall have made feel better about the dog. This problem has just really stumped me, Over the years will the curs I've had before an what I have now even pups and other started dogs I've never had the problem of them just not leaving the hog alone once it was loaded on the atv but I will give all the tips a try and once again thanx for the input
