To the mechanics out there...
My truck is doing something wierd. Don't know if it may be a sensor outta whack or not. She cranks right up. I can be sitting still idling in park, or in gear, going slow or fast (up to 75mph)....the RPM's will jump, randomly as if I'm revving the gas. Anyone have any ideas off the bat as to what might be causing that?
Only thing that's changed recently is the old arse weather!
Thanks in advance.

Ford, chevy or dodge? My dads 01 cummins is doing something similar. It wont run good till the engine warms up and it will start acting somewhat better. While its acting up, i can press the fuel pedel all the way down and it wont do crap. Even after it warms up, i can be going 30, 40, 55 n so forth and ease into the fuel and can be all the way to the floor before it starts to accelerate. If i stop on the fuel, it does what its suppose to do (once its warmed up). He put a new set batteries on it a yr ago and the tck drove like it was suppose to, but bout 4 months later, it started acting up. It has a cable linkage for the throttle, not a tps (throttle position sensor). Any ideas on my dads tck too?

Had the same thing on two different trucks one was injectors if they never been changed and has 350 grand on them probly that the other was a harness issue but did the exact same the only difference the harness problem would stall out if you mashed more than 1/2 way down hope that helps

Bad injectors tend to run bad till they are good and hot

It's a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9 V8. I had alllll kinds of troubles not too long ago with this thing and she's actually finally been running well until now. I just got home from the store and when I pulled into the yard and put her in park, she died. Cranked right back up though. So weird.....

Check your fuel filters I know those yr dodge known for bad coil packs and voltage regulators can cause to shut of when idle but will start and run

I was thinking some sort of brain for the fuel flow once I say it didn't have a tps.

To me it sounds like a throttle position sensor. That can cause eradic idle. Only question I have is when u are running at speed and it revs does the truck respond? Go faster till it idles back.

Charles urs could be injector pump problems. Slow or no response is a fuel issue. I'm guessing y'all have changed the fuel filter.

No, it seems to just stay the same speed just the rpms jump and the engine revvs...

Air,Mobil and file filters were changed before putting the new batteries in it. When the new batteries went in and ran fine then messed up again, is when I had the alt checked, and hung tested a new 1 and nothing changed. Which ruled out over/under voltage. All grounds are there, and even some new 1s I added. Now that judge mentioned the ecm, i will check all connections and run a new direct ground and try that. If that doesn't work, then I'll recomend him get a new ecm or vp pump. Now he does have 25hp tuner on it, which may have something to do with it. I just thought of that. I'll check the connections and pull the tuner out and see if that fixes it.

No, it seems to just stay the same speed just the rpms jump and the engine revvs... Now that yaw brought that up, and you saying the rpm's increase, but no speed changes. That's another thing my dad's 01 is doing. But that only when it's cold, and settles down after the engine warms up. Mrs. Dianna, does your truck do the same thing, act odd and somewhat fix its self after it warms up?

Clutch slipping in an auto can cause rev issue. Normally doesn't cause engine stall when u stop. Could be torque converter problem. Torque converter can slip and also at idle try to hang causing stall. Trans clutches normally don't cause stall unless they get so hot they weld themselves together. One way I have checked my trans before was to crank let warm up put in drive and nail it. See if u have excess rev between gears or while under power. If u do stop put in reverse and nail it. If no excess rev chances are it's trans. If it over revs chances are it's torque converter. Be sure to check fluid prior to doing this. Low fluid can also cause trans clutch slip.

Sounds to me on the diesel is a fuel problem, drain your fuel filter see what comes out sounds like water. Is their any smoke coming out of the exhaust white or gray or blue also could be sucking air around the injector lines they are bad about that. To figure that out start the truck take starting fluid and spray around the lines just the lines if you hear the truck change tones then thats it.
