90 % of the time my dixie dog goes to the woods she comes back with cuts on the tips of both ears. I was wandering if any of yall had any idea what could be causing this ? Its never a bad cut just small enough to bleed. And bleed and bleed and bleed..lol..this morning was probly the worst yet with the tip of her ear being split about a centimeter long.. its the weirdest thing. The only thing I can imagine is barbed wire but it dont seem like it would get just the tip of her ears every time , and its always both of them. ?

That and barb wire is all I can think of. But most times she doesn't have another scratch on her. Its always just the tips of both ears. And its always both of em. I have even told people when we cut loose. "Watch , next time we see that dog both ears will be bleeding " lol..and sure nuff they will be. Beats all I ever saw

If you look at some dogs they will have very thin ears compared to other dogs. The dogs with more robust ears tend to not have this problem. If you run thru the briars with no shirt more than likely you going to get cut to hell. If you put on a good protective shirt you won't have many at all. Barbed wire won't do those kind of cuts cuz the dogs put there head thru easy then bust thru

Saw briars. Black berry briars. Green briars. I would bet those are the cause. That's what u call a brush busting dog.

yep, like others have said, briars cause it. I have an old dog that it happens to every single time, just like yours. Sometimes to the point that when he shakes he gets blood all over everything including other dogs to the point we have to double and triple check everything to make sure all the dogs are good. I have never found anything that works for preventing it but when it happens to him now I pull out a tube of superglue and put a dab on the cuts to stop the bleeding...........just one of those things I reckon.

Is it always on just the tips of the ears ? Thats what I find odd about it . Its always the very tips of both ears every time. And she does the Same thing. Shakes her head and theres blood everywhere.

I guess yall are correct. I just couldnt figure out why it was always just the tips of both ears. But I guess that is a vulnerable spot for a dog ...thanks fellas happy thanksgiving! !

Have you ever had her out running in a field that doesn't have briars? If so, was their the same bleeding? Dogs have blood vessels in their ears and I believe a big reason for the blood vessels is to help cool the dog.
I am wondering if her ears would bleed if she just ran for a while without the briars. Could it be that when the blood starts pumping fast, could she just have weak blood vessels in the end of her ears? Maybe the cuts started from briars and like a scab, the would opens when the blood starts pumping?

Sometimes I am in areas that I think there shouldnt be briars. But she ranges out pretty far so theres no way to tell where all shes been. As far as fields ....everywhere I hunt is woods and creek bottoms. Not to many big feilds where I hunt .

Where do hogs bed? Where do hogs like to go when jumped?
If there is a briar patch the size of a 4 wheeler in 4 miles. U can almost bet a hog is either in it or is gonna head for it when the heat hits em. Atleast that seems to be the case with me.

You right about that shotgun ...I did forget to. I dont know if yall have them where yall are from but we have these litte trees or bushes you might say. They grow these little things that look like small oranges on them and they have thorns all over em that are 2 or 3 inches long. They could kill a dog I bet..lol..

We have thorn trees here. Never seen no lil oranges on them but huge thorns. Thank god they aren't everywhere. Years ago I stuck a thorn thru the palm of my hand.
