Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum and had some questions for all of the more experienced hunters here.

I've read through the TPW website but I'm still a little confused.

I've received verbal permission to hunt on a landowners private property.


What more do I need?



I realize this is probably a stupid question. I'm sorry if it bothers anyone.

Nothing.  You could get written permission if you feel like something may be strange about the place, but not needed.  If it's a small place, you might want to talk to neighbors also.

Make sure that the surrounding property owners are ok with you going to pick up your dog's if they go over. Not hunt just get dogs. Sometimes they will say no problem and give permission to hunt on their property. It is deer season time. So make sure no deer hunters near you. Some will shoot a dog. Make sure to have your hunting license as well. Have fun and good luck.

If I encounter a game warden, what do I say?


Again, sorry about the dumb newbie questions. I just want to be legal as possible.

I have the guys phone number(s) and contact info on my phone, and he has all of mine too. I even have the police chief of the city giving me the okay as well.


You guys think I'm good to head out and get after it?

like already mentioned...deer season is in and deer hunters pay lots of money for food plots, deer feeders, deer blinds cleaning up the place, clearing firing lanes, yearly deer lease fees amongst other expenses, so they do not take it very well when a pack of dogs show up at deer camp in the middle of the night, or when the dogs are baying a pig next to the deer feeder while the hunter is in the deer blind...like already said some will shoot your dogs...it might be best to wait until after deer season...here in Texas you will need a valid hunting license to hunt legally...sounds like you have done better than most when getting permission to hunt...

If u have any doubt written permission solves lots of issues. Verbal is fine but if u run I to a warden at 2 in the morning are u gonna call and wake up the land owner. A simple piece of paper would solve this fast. I have caught people before on farm land I leased and have been told by them that I gave them permission just call myself. Words are only as good or believable as the one giving them.

Never had an issue with landowners...but since your asking...its not a bad idea to have a neutral witness with you when hetting that verbal permission,if by chance something goes sideways(very rere if you do your job right) and things turn into a "he said shes said" situation,then you at least have someone else to prove you had permission.

Here in ms you have to have written permission to avoid trouble with LEO, just a few weeks ago I got a call to hunt some hogs that had been hitting a fellas corn, long story short we turn loose get a hog going and county SD shows up, come to find out the man who give the deer hunters permission to hunt there does not even own the land anymore it was turned over to a bank, the fella who made the call to the SD claiming to be the over see'er didn't no more have permission than the guys deer hunting it, we were giving warnings by the deputy bc he realized what was going on. Next day I make some calls find out who actually owns the land. He tells me he doesn't have an over see'er and gives me written permission to hog hunt it after deer season. So I drive over to this " over see'er" house and have a few choice words with him, show him that I have written permission. Just goes to show you that a man is only as good as his word and that might not be enough, sometimes having that piece of paper with his signature on it will get you out of a bind.
