I've been hunting for several years and raised several puppies. I've never had this issue, but I know there's a first time for everything. I have a young dog that I got when he was just over a year old. He's starting to make a pretty solid dog. My only issue with him is after a hog is caught I cant get my hands on him. My other dogs handle extremely well and will either relay or come to me and leash up. He'll back up and make circles around me and the hog just far enough away to where I cant get my hands on him. I thought this was an age issue, but he's continued to do it and he's2 years old now. Any suggestions on how to break him of this? It's pretty frustrating because the dogs that generally relay have started hanging around the caught hog too because he won't shutup and it's a 10 minute process to get a hold of him.

Hate it when one does that.  Normally its hard when they get to that age if you don't have a handle on them.  As a rule of thumb we usually get a good solid handle on our dogs prior to 1 year old.  We treat them real simular to how we used to treat our duck dogs as far as obedience is concerned. I am by far no expert, but I would think a shock collar might be in order here...especially if he knows what here or NO means.  Then just use it to reinforce the command.

That can get very frustrating. Your dog has probably learned that when there's a dead hog and you say "come here", that he's getting leashed and going home. He's just prolonging the fun he's having hunting. Dogs are usually all about perspective. If it's something you really want to break, than I'd take the time to work and train him. First I'd get him food motivated and try kibble or hotdogs as treats. Skip a meal if you have to, he wont stare. Start by giving a few treats "for free" but careful not to overindulge.  Move back a few feet and use your "come here" command and so on.  Best thing I have found is pulling on his collar when he comes to you so he's associates you touching him to the treat. Use lots of praise and good luck!

Lol I have one like that but he dont bark just circles or goes and sits and watches. Shock collar worked well he knows what I want.  Havent run him in one in a while and he is back to his old habbits.  Mine has handle well ok he has as much handle as any of my hunting dogs he knows come here and shutup and caught hog. About all I ask out of my dogs he just dont like to quit lol as hutch33 said

Id just leave him there and continue hunting... Lead up your main dog and vacate the area... Others should follow. He should get bored eventually and roll out.

If it were me and I had more or better dogs then I would cull him and keep going on. I had a dog like that once spent more time trying to catch him than I did hunting. I go to enjoy myself on a hunt and my dogs better have a handle on them. A dog pack is like a football team and you have to keep them disciplined as such, how many successful coaches you see letting their players do as they please.
