Iv been getting invited to go with some guys to new mexico and run bear but iv never been around bear or hunting them not many close to me in central okla. They want me to bring my hounds i no several of you live in places were theres not bear so my question is if you dont have bears and dogs that know whats going on here handy how do yall start to get a dog to run them? Iv been told they smell alot like a pig but i couldnt confirm that closest bear ive been around was at a zoo haha.

T.R. I dont think a bear smells anything like a hog & I for sure know that dogs know the difference. You would probably not have any problems with young dogs running a bear. Sometimes older dogs are to straight on hogs. Just turn your hounds loose when your friends dogs get the bear track going good. My dogs are trashy enough, they dont care what they run.lol Also, if you have a dog that is growly, please leave him home or you may never get another invite to go bear hunting. More dogs have been killed by fights at the tree, by mean dogs, then were ever killed by bear.

My main gyp is pretty strait laced she wont even acknowledge a coon thats right by the truck whens shes on the rig. I have always ran bluetick dogs but the strain (smokey river) iv always fooled with has kinda went in a direction i dont care for. If i was to want to get a good big game hound i could use on both where would yall suggest i start to look? I am open to other breds im not real picky. Thanks cajun for your reply!

Cajun or tn hillbilly, Tom is out of it for a lil while. I have dogs from both guys and would not trade, or ssle em for the world. They have tons of gritt and bottom. I just had one shipped in from hillbilly. I have been to cayjuns house and got pups. Both are straight up men.

I have some buddy's that bear hunt and hog hunt. And just from my experiences and listening to them over the years is most hog dogs will run a bear but a lot of good bear dogs won't fool with a hog. You shouldn't have any trouble packing in on the track and getting them in on some races.
