hunting alone

Hunting alone anyone do it snd how do u feel about it. Do u go during the day and do u carry a firearm just in case. The only reason im asking seems like my days off are during the week and all my buddies work during the week . Any info will help.

I LOVE hunting alone AND workin pups on mock hunts. On real hunts i tote 3-4 bay/find dogs and my .45 or .357, on mock hunts i tote me, pups and a camera, i love bein alone in the woods w/ my dogs.....really gives me a chance to learn em better

I like hunting alone and only take pups and/or one old dog and a pup. Something that I can call out if necessary. Always have camera and a Garmin attached to my backpack in case something happens to me my other half can find me. I fell in a gator hole last year and it made me think I better have a way someone can find me. Lol. It can be most exhilarating to now that it is just you and your dogs in the woods.

I hate hunting alone, but I do it for my dogs.  I carry a .38 S&W for those "just in case" situations.  I carry it alone or when hunting with other people.  I only hunt during the day; I have young boys that are too young to hunt at night, so I choose to be home at night.  I am extra careful when hunting alone, it is easy to get in a bind when hunting alone.

I used to hunt alone, day or night when i was in east tx with plenty of public land available. I make sure to have my astro, a back up gps, a compass in case the electronics crap out, a headlamp, a back up light source and extra batteries for all ele powered devices, and extra water. All that is day or night hunting, plus i packed a .45 with 2 additional mags. The following link is my next purchase for an emergency to carry on my person no matter where i go.

The units work on 406mhz and 121.5 vhf emerg avn channel, which is monitored by nearby atc and ALL military avn freq.
iv got a strobe beacon with an ir cover that iv started toting but the plb is my nxt purchase, and then a backup handheld vhf multi band radio.

So when we brought the dogs we had  a big group of hogs that wouldnt break so we sent the bulldog in hoping it be like bowling once he hit the pack we would be able to single one out but they just started putting a whoopin on the bulldog after five min they broke and we were able to get one. What would u do if you were in this situation alone?

I haven't this year, my age is starting to catch up real fast.  I usually hunt alone as often as with others.  I only take 1 or 2 dogs cur dogs and a bull dog.  it's very difficult to lead more than two dogs out of the woods. Sometimes I Cary a gun and shoot over curs, some times a pistol, just in case,but mostly just a real good bulldog.  You are putting your safety in their hands, you better be able to count on them.  More often than not when hunting alone is when it seems you catch the big nastys.  And when you have plenty if help it's a pig catching.   Lol

 When I hunt alone I bring two dogs and my .35 rem. I enjoy that just as much as with bulldogs.

If carrying a pistol, wade in the pack and start dropping them in their tracks or until they broke. If not able to carry a gun, wade in there very carefully, cautiously and respectful of them and do what needs to be done. It's fine to cautious of them, but being scared (not saying any1 is) is like having a catch dog that catches every now and then.

I prefer the daylight, but I hunt day or night both alone, take whatever dogs I want be it one or eight, don't matter to me. I bring my 22 mag revolver along but haven't had to use it yet. I make sure two people know where I am heading to and double check my gear. if I get in a tight spot at night ive alwys had it in my mind to just go ahead and camp for the night and catch the hog as the suns coming up.

I like to hunt alone but I don't take a catch dog I just take one old dog and pups. And my 22 mag but I usually just watch them bay. If I see a chance to get a hand on it I will try to catch it unless it's just a monster.

I wouldn't send my bulldog in to a big pack of hogs to be destroyed whether I was alone or with 10 other people..........not tryin to being rude at all but thats just asking for a dead/seriously hurt bulldog, a pack of sows will tear a bulldog to pieces.........if you play your cards right and have the right bay dogs and the right bulldog you could catch and tie the group one at a time with a lariat rope and some handy work. if I was alone I would slide in nice and slow watch the dogs work for a while, if I saw a hog I just had to have I'd put a bullet in his head!

I have hunted alone it's ok but I like to make memories they are much better enjoyed with good friends and family. And even the best need help I have nothing to prove or gain by being alone

I could be wrong but I thought in Texas you weren't alowed to hunt hogs with dogs on public land.

Jason a, You are right and wrong at the same time. Some public "federal owned" lands allow it, while nearly all "state owned" public land does not allow it.

 Thats where the www comes in handy, and paper back pamplet/books published by the state and federal land owners will keep the "i thought it was legal" to a minimum. The public land i hunted was corp land and in the area i hunted, it is legal, but the west side of the dam, it isnt legal. Thats where reading the rules and law comes into play, and if still unsure, pick up the tele and call the possum sheriff or ranger and ask them for the rules and if different than what you read, their interiptation of the 2, bc they r the 1s thats gonna be writting the ticket. Not ole joe snuffy from the corner bar or ole so n so from any hunting forum. If unsure, cant find, to lazy to look it up urself or in dout, always call the governing agency. That 2min phone call is cheaper than the "i didnt know the law" ticket

Jason, the mid paragraph was NOT directed at you, just a general statement for EVERYONE. There have been those who will ask what the law reads instead of using the internet to look the law up on their own. Its just being pure lazy when folks want someone else to do the research. The exacue of i couldnt find it is 99.99% removed nowadays with the invention of the internet and search engines such as google bing and the other 1s.

Your right  we were wrong to send a bulldog in. Lession learned .  Im going to have to start taken a rope with me thats a good idea.
