hunting alone

I LOVE hunting alone AND workin pups on mock hunts. On real hunts i tote 3-4 bay/find dogs and my .45 or .357, on mock hunts i tote me, pups and a camera, i love bein alone in the woods w/ my dogs.....really gives me a chance to learn em better

Justin...I totally agree with what you said...when I had my own places I loved going alone just to learn what pups had that natural inclination to range out and hunt. who had the nose etc...etc...this helped in deciding on which pups stayed and which ones have to go...when out alone one can be more focused on educating the dogs to be more thorough in working an area or track...to make better hunting dogs out of them by better handling...most don't really care about taking the time to analyze your pups or even work on your dogs hunting style, just goes with the territory especially when all the hunts are invites...

hunting alone is just fine but why not take your kids, grandkids or good friends and make good memories as JP already mentioned...

I got this spot ive been to once thats never had dogs ran on it. So when we brought the dogs we had  a big group of hogs that wouldnt break so we sent the bulldog in hoping it be like bowling once he hit the pack we would be able to single one out but they just started putting a whoopin on the bulldog after five min they broke and we were able to get one. What would u do if you were in this situation alone?

I wouldn't send my bulldog in to a big pack of hogs to be destroyed whether I was alone or with 10 other people..........not tryin to being rude at all but thats just asking for a dead/seriously hurt bulldog, a pack of sows will tear a bulldog to pieces.........if you play your cards right and have the right bay dogs and the right bulldog you could catch and tie the group one at a time with a lariat rope and some handy work. if I was alone I would slide in nice and slow watch the dogs work for a while, if I saw a hog I just had to have I'd put a bullet in his head! 



Your right  we were wrong to send a bulldog in. Lession learned .  Im going to have to start taken a rope with me thats a good idea.

Its funny you brought up the rope i posted the old yeller post an the boy was using a rope in it too to get them hogs before he got tore up..

Jason, the mid paragraph was NOT directed at you, just a general statement for EVERYONE. There have been those who will ask what the law reads instead of using the internet to look the law up on their own. Its just being pure lazy when folks want someone else to do the research. The exacue of i couldnt find it is 99.99% removed nowadays with the invention of the internet and search engines such as google bing and the other 1s.

No problem.  I had read,if I recall correctly, that using dogs in the Sam Houston National Forest to hunt hogs was illegal.  That is why I replied

I hunt alone a lot. To keep from having split bays I hunt one cur and a bulldog. Do not use a gun myself, like to catch and tie. Also hunt 2 curs out and no catch dog. My curs will usually catch everything themselves.

Justin nailed it with his first response. There are less distractions when you hunt alone. This allows you to focus on your dogs behavior and really get in tune with them. I believe we are naturally a little more cautious and aware of our surrounding environment as well. Another member made a great point about the. # of dogs u take while hunting alone. 2 to 3 max unless you have some serious handle on them.

You ain't the first and won't be the last hog hunter to cut a bulldog into a sounder of hogs. I have seen them scatter more than I have seen them rally. We normally have a couple of rough catchy help dogs on the hunt that will wade in with us and the bulldog. I wouldn't recommend doing that when you are hunting alone! It can/does get a little western!

I don't exactly hunt alone but I don't exactly have help most hunts. My wife and 3yr old go on nearly every hunt. While they are company and entertainment (3yr old) when it's slow they aren't much help in the thick. Not that the wife can't be but the lil one is a handful herself. I run RCD and rough catchy dogs usually 2 of them. I carry a bulldog as well.  I do carry a pistol for emergency. Only once have I had a problem. I enjoy these hunts but I also enjoy haveing a buddy along to lend a hand and enjoy it with also.

Jason a, u r correct bout shnf. But there r a couple other nf n a good bit of corp land that does allow it.

I have not . Hunted alone , but I can see where it would come in handy in learning each dog.
