runnin the back trail

Cant figure it out. I have a 14 month old dog that runs a hot track for awhile then all of a sudden will reverse and run the back trail. He doesn't do it all the time but  just now and then. Is this something he will grow out of.

Are you saying he's working the track backwards? If so i would give him time and see of he ever gets it figured out. I had a dog that would work it backwards and when it got to cold of a track for him he'd just quit it. Then it finally clicked that when he was going the wrong way and he got it all worked out.  So if thats what your asking then i'd say yes theres a good chance he'll get it figured out .

Ya he starts out running the track the right direction. Then he will stop and run the back trail and then quit.One day he will strike ,run,bay. the next day hes back to the bad stuff.

It's called being a pup. I would bet when he is on track going the right way he loses it. Then he circles back and picks up the track running backwards. He follows till he loses it again. I would give him more time.

14 months is dang sure still a pup. I would be glad to see him working the track at that age. No matter which way he's headed. Now its just a matter of seeing if he will get all the kinks worked out or not. Sounds like he's off to a good start though especially if he sometimes will strike,run,stop and bay one by himself sometimes. Good luck !!

It's common. Work him as much as you can and he'll figure it out. Sometimes shows up in young dogs getting a little overexcited.

Let him run it. He'lol figure it out.  Sometimes a hog or hogs will break out of a bed leaving others behind. He might just find him some running the back track.

I think this is a good and honest question.  It would be easy to believe a dog may be running the back trail when in fact, the dog quits running th track and runs back on the same traal he came in on.  The answer to this question would probablt be if the pup stays on the back trail past where he started it.

This is my opinion, nothing more.

Puppies and young dogs are going to run a back track especially when you first start em out, it's only natural. Saying that though, if it becomes a habit and they do it more then a few times and aren't progressively taking it further and further, then I cull them. A dog should have the brain power to drive a track the right way.

If they pull a loss, get off the buggy and walk to where they last had it picked up, and push them further and help them puppies out.  It will really help them from what I saw.

Here is some more info on this dog. If he is running with the other dogs I have he stays with the track.If he is dumped out on the race with other dogs hes not familiar with. He is running the dogs and not the track.When he looses the other dogs he back tracks.

Sounds to me like he is just trailing his self back to where you put him on track.

I wouldn't be to concerned bout keep running him after a a while he should pick it up and move on out. Time is the main key in getting to where you need or want to be dogs are no different some just do it faster

Trailing forward and back is a major fault. A young dog that does it on a regular basis is more apt to do it when older. I've seen a lot more hounds do it than curs. With that being said, all dogs have been guilty of it when conditions were right. Dumping fresh dogs right out of the box on a red hot track will cause a dog to go the wrong way more than anything else.
