I had a male for a little while great looking dog but he was scared of his own shadow and you could not catch him for nothing. He never made it to the woods. I got him at about a year old that mite of had alot to do with it. Id try another someday but id make sure i got a pup.

Have raised them for years. Numerous lines and love the breed. So I will give it to you straight.

Dumb as stumps
Very little nose
No observed bottom.

Cross them on a pit........best catch dog you can own.
Leggy, fast, heat tolerant, large framed  and will catch a freaking Grizzly Bear.

Save yourself the trouble on the hunting end........they don't.

I have a ridge x pit. Straight catch RCD. He will find his own. Hunts out around 300. Run all day.  He may be the exception to the rule but I sure like him.

I have owned 5 as pets and tried hog hunt with two of them. I have the the same experience as ybm.

have always been interested in the pit cross.

Ybm, is there a right/wrong or personal preferance on which way to go on the breeding.
male pit x female ridge or femal pit x make ridge

Shotgun do you have a pic of your cross?

Not that I have observed.

I recommend picking through the litter and going with the larger framed pups. Will give you traveling speed and holding power.

Had one back in the mid 90's that could flat run down after it broke.

Love their heat tolerance for these thickets as well.

But they are complete bone heads.

Sure there is somebody out there that has run pure bred ones successfully.

I have probably raised or owned a hundred of them through the years and have never observed a pure worth a dang on the hunting end. Even if I did observe one the percentage of non performers has already made up my mind.

Very good breed for crosses though.

Had a pit/rhodesian cross catch dog, female. One of the best, lots of sense. Only  catch dog I've ever own that once you killed the pig. pulled her over and told her dead pig, she would sit down beside you till you told her to follow.
