lost the antenna part of the assembly...no spare parts to be bought so instead of buying another I fixed it for under five bucks...seems like it should gain more range...will use it tomorrow morning... I had to grind and taper the long bolt and jammed it so it would hold...then I used a little epoxy for insurance...in case you lose yours and want to fix it I used quarter inch bolts...   |

What bout going to radio shack or a truck stop n getting a whip antenna? U may have to make or buy an adapter to go from 1/4" fm at base, up to 3/8"/1/2" fm antenna

Proper frequency tuning of an antenna is determined by the whip length. This is why it didn't work.
Just fyi...you can burn the radio out in the handheld (and collars too for that matter) by transmitting using an incorrectly tuned antenna.

thanks everyone...and thanks for the info and heads up Bryant...
I bought another long range antenna with a longer whip and it does mention about possible damage if not used correctly...I reckon I will buy another one with the shorter whip so I can carry it around on my 4 wheeler...

On those magnetic base antennas like you posted above, usually there will be a spring looking thing that threads onto the base, then the actual antenna shaft is held into that by an allen head set screw. They usually come with a card that tells you the proper length for frequency. You need to take a hacksaw or something and cut the antenna to the correct length. I can't remember off hand what frequency range the Garmin system uses, but you can google and find it.
