I mentioned recently I got back one of my older dogs that I sold a few years ago. Chance is almost 9yrs old, alittle slower, but he still has what it takes to get it done by himself!
Went to a property my buddy had lined up. He went there last year and got on a big a$$ hog, but was not able to get him stopped with the dogs he had on the hunt. This time we brought his Rio dog and my Chance dog, and a bulldog. First drop the dogs worked hard and got on nothing. Picked up the dogs and went to another part of the property. Dropped the dogs and in about 20min we had a bay! Headed to the dogs, and before we got half way to them the dogs split and were running in different directions! We decided to sit tight and see what happened. Shortly Rio came bayed, but Chance was still motoring away in the other direction. Decided to have my friend go to Rio, and I would follow Chance and meet up after I got Chance or they got the hog Rio Bayed!
I will have to say old Chance has not lost any of his hunt! For the next hour I chased him through the property! I had no clue where I was or where I was headed just trying to get closer to my dog!! Finally he gets what he was after stopped, and is baying solid! As I was heading to him and the bay I was thinking what was I going to do without a catchdog or a gun when I got to the bay! Came in down wind to see what he had bayed and when I slipped in 20yds away I see a big old hog and Chance going at it! I saw that Chance was cut in his shoulder, hip, and some gut hanging out of his stomach!! I was not going to let that hog kill Chance after getting him back. I figured if I was able to get the hog off his feet we would be okay, so I pulled my 12" Persian fighting knife and bull rushed the hog!! He never even saw me till I hit him full speed tackling/stabbing him!! I was able to take him off his feet and on his back, but I flipped over him with the momentum I had from tackling him! Alittle wrestling match with him, and I was able to get out from under him! Hog dies and Chance flops over and finally gives up!! Check him over and the only really bad wound was his stomach. Rinsed off the gut, and pushed back in, took off my shirt and tied a pressure bandage around him! Called my friend and told him I had no idea where I was! The Garmin showed a trail/road about 900yds from me so I told him I was carrying Chance out and for him to come to me as fast as they could! They met me about 200yds from the dirt road, my buddy takes over carrying Chance, and off to the emergency vet clinic! The vets took great care of him and he will live to hunt another day when he fully recovers!! We were all very happy to hear he was going to be okay, at least till we found out what the vet bill was!!!
