Larry Smith invited me over to hunt his lease. We turned out on some good tracks & Bosco & Red Gal trailed out & jumped the hog. Larry & friends packed to them & we had a good bay. I knew it was a big hog because I could hear Bosco baying. Got in there & turned the catchdogs loose & caught a 200-225# boar.Red Gal took a shot to the shoulder & one of Jordans dogs took a bad shot to the flank. One of the Dogos had a K 9 tooth knocked out. Went down a piece & turned out again. Dogs jumped but we ended up pulling them as they were headed off the lease & it was still turkey season. At 11:30 we found a good track & put Spud & Red Gal out on it. They left trailing but not opening. They were paralleling the road and we stayed up with them. They went 930 yards & jumped the hog. They ran him about a mile & I dumped Bosco & a pup in & Larry dumped some cur dogs in also. The pup never made it to them but Bosco did. They went about a mile & bayed in a beaver pond. We got within 30 yards & turned the catchdogs loose. We waded in and this hog was big. A Dogo on one ear, Bosco on the other ear and Red Gal had him by the back leg. We did not see the other Dogo until we were up close & the hog had him down under water. We got to the hog, flipped him & got him tied but the whole time I was worried because I did not see Spud but I had heard him baying the whole time we were walking in. We got the hog to a little island & found Spud about 20 yards away. He was already going into shock. The hog had tore out half his throat & he had already bled out. Red Gal took a shot to the back end & both catchdog had cuts on them. We headed straight out but he died by the time we got back to the camp. Larrys dogs were showing bayed & when we got there they were both cut down. Spud was one of those special dogs that was just a pleasure to hunt. He was just as good on bear as he was hogs & actually preferred bear. Andy & I had nicknamed him the closure. There were dogs that could stay with him for 3 or 4 hours but after that he would be out front. He could stay glued to a hog or bear no matter how far it ran. R.I.P. Spud & thanks for 4 years of good hunting. Thank you Chris Leyden for giving me this dog. This hog was 300-325#
