If u can't find faults with ur dogs ur not looking hard enough. I just run ol trashy dillo dogs and don't worry bout it. I don't figure I will ever have a solid set of dogs. But depending on source and situation combined with numbers I figure 1 to 2 years minimum. I think it takes longer to really learn a dog than some are willing to do.

To get a solid pack of dogs takes two things time and money. Money will be spent ether way you go. It will take many try's to get the right combosand to fill the gaps left from each dog. I prefer this method to the super dog route. Wich takes 50 yrs and you might get one maybe two. Lot of time and money spent. decent dogs put together right can be achieved rather quick and with the right pair will be just as effective as any dog out there. Terrain and other things will have to be thought of to. But all in all a decent dog and little hard word and it goes pretty quick

years for me.......... my buddy that got me into hunting had a pretty decent set of dogs, they kept us in pork pretty consistent but as for myself, it took me quite a while before I considered my yard of being good...........then I lost my favorite dog and went and sold most of my good ones to buddies to start over again with my favorite dogs blood.......call me crazy........right now I've got a pile of pups and two old geriatric granny dogs lol but I've got some new ones on the ground and will be ready to give em hell again next year with a pile of trashy youngins!

shoot boys if you can't find faults in the best dog in the woods GET OUT because you have lost the will to find or breed better dogs , and that's what it's all about in the end .

I don't look for faults in a dog I look at what they do good at and push that and the faults will fall off or be over shadowed by the good. The faults are very noticeable I don't think they should be dwelled on just me you can find faults with anything. Some issues can't be change but most can if you stick with. Good thing our wife's ain't as picky as some doggers lol

I'm in line with Judge Peels position. Also, if you want a pack of good dogs, you will probably go through several dogs to get what you want. If you start with pups, you will have a lot more time invested in the dog in order to see what it's going to be rather than buying an adult dog. To get a good set of dogs, you have to cull the ones that don't make the grade. Training and patience is also importent. You get know where if you cull good dogs because you your lack of ability to read your dogs, analyze things CORRECTLY, and so on. I personally have a tendency to start with pups from best bred to best from dogs that hunt the way I prefer to hunt. I have a long time invested in a dog that might not suit me though.

I feel like Halfbreed, but I will put it a lil different. You need to be able to identify your dogs weaknesses in order to correct that. If you don't know what they don't have you won't be able to fix it.

It has taken me the better part of almost 3 years to get a pack together that I can hunt and not be embarrassed of.I know that isnt very long at all but this dang hog huntin has consumed me.Been through a heap of dogs spent a pile of money but that's what it takes for the fast track of not being dependent on anyone else to go catch a pig.I had good luck buying grown dogs and raising pups up training with the grown dogs now my first pups are my lead dogs and there is definitely a feeling of accomplishment in that. If I can give any advice it would be to figure out the style of hunting that suits you and the places you hunt the best. I bought many dogs that were OK but didn't suit my style of hunting.I'm now in the second stage of the disease and trying to build my own breeding program so that my children and I can enjoy the sport in its entirety.

Top shelf dogs of any style ain't easy to get unless you got a nice check book or a huge pile of dogs to go thru. I had several set of cats none ever really impressed me they where ok dogs but not impressive the ones I got now are very solid in what they do. They get it done for me long story short you got to put work in if ya want a good dog

Without a doubt!! It would be impossible to have this discussion unless we KNEW we were all in agreeance on what a "solid pack" is. Going and catching a hog doesn't really mean we're "soild." IMO If I leave about half mine home I think I'm pretty "solid." Lol As far as the "faults" discussion goes........ The more a guy can live with, the futher he is from a "solid pack." IMO. They all have faults but until you've seen dogs with few, you'll be content with dogs with many. In short, if you want my ideal of a "solid pack" its gonna take over 18 yrs or your better than me. Still haven't built me a "solid pack" but I catch plenty of hogs and have a lot of fun. Good luck
