I recently acquired a gyp that is a awesome dog I have seen her strike off the wheeler with good dogs on the ground that had no clue a hog was there she is 8 now and never had pups I am on the fence about trying to breed her on one hand I have 11 pups off my 2 best dogs and probably don't need anymore pups but this old gyp is special she just a step above a good dog. On one hand I hate to let her blood go on the other she getting old and I want her to be able to hunt as long as possible and she sure would be help with the new pups wish she was 4 not 8 but I took her any way I could get her.

You are going to regret it if you dont breed her. maybe you could get her knocked up and let a hunting buddy raise the pups and you guys could split them so you dont have so many pups on your hands.

I would simply ask myself is she better than what I already got does she do something better than what I already got and that should sum it up. Being 8 and never bred hope she takes could be hard on a older dog that never had pups

Something that good you gotta breed I would do it next heat if she were mine being she's 8.Soon as you wait something will happen and you'll be kicking yourself in the butt.

If she comes from a line of good dogs, I would take her to the vet and get their advice on the risks involved with breeding her. Might make your decision a little easier. U might have to really pamper her through the raising of the pups by keeping her and them inside. Might be some prenatal vitamins or other supplements to help her along.

Jason, I have one at my house now that is 13 yrs old and bred her this past spring, she had 7 healthy pups that are 10wks old now and both she and the pups are in great shape. 8 is not too old to breed her, just make sure to take good care of her while she is pregnant and weeening her pups, milk replacer mixed in her food as well as the pups food make a big difference and if you will start giving it to her before she has the pups it will help her and them out that much more.

I appreciate all the advise I think the two dogs I raised are good solid dogs they have found me a lot of hogs and they hunt good. Now the old gyp I couldn't tell you how many she has found but its a lot and she does it so dang easy makes a good dog look silly so yeah she is better than what I raised but she is older and she was hunted where hogs were plenty. I will give you a example the a few weeks ago we were hunting and the boy I was with had tossed some corn out here and there well we pull up on one of these spots and the corn didn't look messed with but I tossed the old gyp and my young male out anyway, old gyp and my male cut up in the woods straight to a big ole nasty barrs bed and blew up. We was all sitting and listening waiting on my brother well the hog broke went strait to the old nasty bottom where its nothing but briars and water. I am watching my Garmin and my male is 800 yards and out in the middle of this marsh and she is a couple hundred yards behind him well we pull down close and still the male is going round and round in the marsh while old gyp is now heading back the way they came every now and then I could hear her open. Now I got my solid male dog that is a reliable dog going round and round in the marsh and the old huzzys a half mile in the other direction so off we go down the pipe line trying to get closer we stop and shes 200yards in the thicket raising the roof we sat for a while and she shows treed finally my male shows up we send another dog in and they were booming crawled in and killed a nice 300 lb barr. She showed my male dog up now he is a 3 1/2 year old dog has been on and found a lot of hogs I got this old gyp to help with these pup cause she is semi open you get her on a hog and she stays on that hog and I like that. I haven't seen her in heat yet but im thinking hard on breeding her back to my male.

What's to lose other than genetics lol I would have the vet do breeding soundness exam on her just make sure she can safely have pups, might be a reason she's never had any.

If she's a better than average dog id breed her and keep every pup and then pick what I like. It cost more to keep every pup but if it's certain things you like in dogs like range, natural go etc. You just about have to keep all of them and see when they get a little older and that way you won't get rid of the naturals and keep a pair of duds. If you get two natural go getters it's worth keeping the whole litter to me

I agree Bo Pugh. It's the naturals that make it look easy and they are hard to come by.Sounds like she's one and odds are she'll throw one just gotta find it.
