I have a 14 month old Hangin Tree Cowdog that broke her back leg last night. She broke it close to the hip joint. Took her to the vet today and they gave me three options...
Put a pin in it and once it heals remove the pin- $500
Amputate the leg $300
Give her anti inflammatory and pain meds and hope for the best-$50
I am concerned that if we go the route of pinning it then it won't ever be right. She is a young dog that is showing a lot of potential. She has a lot of drive, a really good down and a good call back. She still needs to worked with and her training finished but so far so good.
Just wondering what everyone thinks

Was it angulated or displaced? For me, it would come down to type and severity of the fracture. If my vet thought it would heal right on it's own, I'd go that route. If not, put the hardware in.

My wife is actually the one that took her today and she didn't say how the fracture was. The vet said of course the best option is the hardware but also said she is young and should heal fine without it. Said it will probably take a little longer though

I did the pin on one of my dogs. His femur was broke laterally. Took a long time to heal but he still has the leg and other than being outa shape is no worse for ware. I have noticed he does favor the leg a lil but not sure what if any lasting effect may be. My dog lived nearly 5months in a 4x4 pup pen in my kitchen. Like above the severity changed my actions. I think I chose the best option we will see.

I had a 15-16 month dog brake his legs. The x-rays showed his leg was shattered. It cost me $1500 for the pins and screws. During the cold times, he favored the leg more than during the warmer months. As shotgun said, he favored it no matter what and u need to keep the dog off the leg as much as possible and then needs physical theropy just as we would to buil the leg strength and usage back up. I had $3000 in the dog and when i sold him, it was for $1000, but i was happy with him before and after the injury and sold bc i needed the money and the guy that got him said he was a cow herding sob and was rough.

For me this decision would be based solely on what's best for the dog and its future performance. If the vet is one you trust $500 is a reasonable price for the surgery I would go with what my vet thinks the best course of action is.

Had a pretty good dog with lots of drive get gored in the back end and severed the nerve to his back leg... Had it amputated and he still hunts his butt off With a user on this board now and he still hunts him and says he does just fine. Guys name on here is redneckrob. I'd say so long as the drive to hunt is there that still having one back leg to them is gona be just as good. Not big on pins and such having some in my arm... They suck. But I like my arm so... Grin

Been through several vets I now have one I trust. If you question the motives of this vet find another one. I have seen healthy dogs suck wind and lame dogs run a marathon. ....

Gonna cost you no matter what. One way or the other. I've seen them take the leg off at the hip and they turned out ok with very little limping or slowing them down and I've seen them take one off where it turned bad and infection set in and he lost the dog.  Mine cost me close to 800 bucks for pins, but the little dude turned out great with it.  If shattered too bad then she may  have infection set in and you lose her, but that can happen after surgery too.

Sometimes it a hard choice.  Good luck with whatever you do.

if you trust your vet i'd say "listen doc , i am gonna use this dog for a living . if you can fix him i don't mind spending the money . if you can't fix him tell me now . "

of course nothing is 100% , but he should tell you what kinda chance you can expect .

Well... Got her back from the vet today and the price he charged was actually cheaper. He said the break was clean and everything went perfect during the surgery. She is doing great now and we will see how she does in the long run. Thanks for all of the replies.

Sounds like a good honest vet I'm sure she'll be back at it in a couple months.

I bet she will be good as new. I had a dog that broke his front fore leg, the vet wanted me to do surgery, I couldnt afford it at the time, so I let it heal on its own. I wanted him to put a cast on it but he said it didnt need one because the injured area was already calcified( when the flesh around the break is hard and swollen) I just left him in a kennel for a couple months so he couldnt run, he gradually used that leg more and more. The vet said be sure he doesnt run on it for three months because the break was long. He healed up great, you couldnt even tell. glad I didnt do that surgery...
