Safest way is manually rather than poison.I build a drag or rake and set it with a boat and pull it with truck tractor or what ever.you can take a length of pipe or square stock then weld pieces of rebar down it creating a rake attach a piece of chain to both ends and pull from the center with a clevis. The size is can vary but I have learned that if your drag is to small and light it will ride up and over the vegetation rather than staying on the bottom digging. Minimum 8' I'd say. Also weld your rebar in the center with equal lengths on either side of the pipe so if it rolls it will dig either direction.

There are several good herbicides labeled for aquatic use and safe for fish. First you need to correctly identify your weed, then test your alkalinity and choose the best herbicide for the job. Or you could manually remove it lol. PM if you have any questions.

In the state of texas Karmex is a federal offense. Feed stores sale it for herbicide use. But will tell you thats what to put in it. 35.65 in lufkin. It will kill you're fish and drop the oxygen level to fast. But works. As far as copper sulfate a water bottle full is supposed to kill fish and we put the whole bottle in ours and didn't kill any fish. As for as weeds it will not kill weeds. it is mainly an algecide.

Also karmex is supposed to cause F1 genetic mutations. Water primrose is a newer invasive species and it hit our pond for the last few summers. Its hard to kill. Copper sulfate will kill chara or coon tail as some say and the moss that grows under water.

Copper sulfate and karmex in large amounts will kill the moss to the point it will take the oxygen from the water killing the fish. It can be used in small amounts to kill moss in just small areas a little at a time. My suggestion would be to go to Tractor Supply and get the pond dye, Blue Bayou and Aqua Blue are two of them. The dye will gradually kill the moss keeping the fish safe.

My fish are doing just fine. As tuskhog said, a little at a time. I put a bag out in small quantities over a 6 month span.

If your situation is like ours was I can tell you exactly how to kill it. Wait until your water is at is lowest level and spray it with 2-4-D, the stuff that's still in the water spray lightly and the stuff that's on the bank (due to low water level) spray it regular. We used it and it didn't kill not 1 fish or hurt our pond in any way that we could tell.
