This is hard to do but once you catch him turn him loose agin . Do that acouple of times , so he knows your hands don't mean " hunts over " If every time you put your hands on him he knows he's gonna go in the box instead of hunt ( sounds like a high drive dog ) then he's gonna avoid you .
I had a bird dog that as a pup was just like your talking about and it never failed for him to make me look like a fool when it counted.
Good luck Hope that helps some Take care

A friend of mine got a dog one time it was a little off but not to bad he had it few weeks and said hey let's ru this dog. Well got to the spot and his collar wasn't working so I put mine on it and then he said idk if this dog is cattle broke I said well we fix that put shock collar on it. Let my spotted dog out and she bayed ten feet from the truck and ran the hog on my trailer the race was on let few dogs out caught the pig and I noticed that the new dog did nothing didn't bay catch run off or nothing I reached over and patted her on the head. Same thing on the next bay I told that well just keep putting her out there she might turn on. So we headed back to the truck and there it went dog wouldn't come to us for nothing 6 hrs later I was trying to run the dog down in the truck needless to say never got the dog back and lost two collars can't stand skiddish dogs

I got one that is skittish. Best way for me to catch him is drop the tailgate at the house. In the woods I can catch him easy. Most of the time I say load up and he does. Never understood why it's so hard at the house tho. I have threaten to shoot him 20x around the house. Never in the woods.

Its easier if you start as a puppy, but can be done with any dog. Build a bond with him. Teach sit, stay, and come. Start with treats or pieces of kibble as rewards. Put him on a 20' check chord with a choke chain. Give the "come" command with a small jerk on the chord. Reel him in to you with the chord and give a jerk as needed if he gets off track. Praise/Reward him when he gets it right. He needs to eventually understand that there is no option but to do as told. The shock collar will replace the chord after he is consistent on the chord. Give the "come" command and "nick" him with the shock collar. The "nick" replaces the jerk on the chord. If he's on his way to you, dont shock him when he's doing the right thing. Only when he goes the wrong way. Dog needs to know you are the Boss, not just the guy giving him a ride to the woods. I make my dogs sit every day before I feed them. They stay sitting, I put down the bowl, their eyes are on ME, and I say "ok", then they eat.

Come on up and I'll help you work with your dog if needed. Tyler isnt that far and you can camp at the arena or stay in a dog friendly hotel in Tyler. There is room for RV's and trailers. There is also the East TX Hog Baying Championship in Kountze. It's an open bay event, but they have a Terrier only class as well. We run our jagds in all open classes and do pretty well.

Iv got a hound like this and i think a dirt nap is in her future. She is young, 8-9 months. Always been skitish. Iv left her out a couple days without food n it didnt make her anymore easier to catch, even with the feed bucket or feed in the kennel. I was thinking of a chaining her instead of kenneling, but if i put a lead on her, she is t bad, just needs a lil coaching to come along, but nothing more than a very lite tug and talking, but if she is loose, its usually threats of a dirt nap. Iv been bowed up like a cut worm the past few months on my 4 days off a month, so im hoping since most is caught up, im gonna spend some time working with her and if by 3 months, no improvent, mr 22 will solve it for me and ill find another blue to start over with.

Why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man's rights as easily as a king can!
