jdt and I had the pleasure of helping our friend Dale Toon gather his cattle off of his Forest Service lease last month near Smithville, OK. He grazes the lease from springtime until mid-October. We spent October 13, 14 and 15 riding with Dale and his family and friends to find and drive the cattle in to the home place to winter them. Good folks and great hospitality provided by Dale and his wife Tabitha made this a week to remember. Each day we trailered to an area in which Dale thought cattle were likely to be, unloaded and rode while letting the dogs (usually 2 or 3) hunt; when cattle were located and bunched, we drove them in. I think the longest drive was about 15 miles. On that drive when we reached the truck and trailer, I volunteered to drive it in; so I made only about half that drive. That was plenty of fun for me! jdt took some pictures and I will try to post some of them.      I will post more pictures as I can. Also, jdt may wish to provide his comments on our week. |

you pretty well covered it . nice country , good company ,good dogs and good food . one thing you forgot is that we rode about 20 miles before we found that bunch of cattle haha . dale figured we had rode between 70 and 80 miles in 3 days !
we bayed hogs about every day and caught cut and marked about a 100 # boar that killed my best dog . dale felt so bad about it he give me a good started dog that dr long sent as a pup , again GOOD FOLKS . i hope to go next spring and help pen some of his wild cattle on the 50,ooo acre place !

50,000 acres??? Really? Wow! That's incredible. Sorry about the loss of ur dog. Sure does look like tons of fun though. Should be interesting when y'all return next time to see what those barrs turned into. Good luck with the pup.

thanks folks . i tried to work that new dog by hisself a couple of days after i got home , he didn't do anything but he'll come around . they said i wouldn't be able to get a hand on him for 10 days cause he was kinda a 1 man dog . i was real easy around him and he slept in the motel with me on the way home .
i went to catch a bull yesterday in middle tn and took 2 litter mates that were full siblings to the dog i got killed in ok ( cowboyxsue) . this place was as hilly and steep as themm ok. mountains and parts of it thicker brush . that male dog is steppin up as a find dog since i lost soot . we rode for 3 hrs on 750 acres before we found this bull , about ready to give up we were making our way back towards the truck when they winded this bull laying down 30 yards in a thicket . that dude stayed bayed for a little bit and then started walking on them . an hour later after he had took us up and down every ridge and through every thicket on that place he finally headed to the barn lol, them dogs were out front the whole time and when i finally got close enough to throw a loop he turned to fight and i got a rope on him . ten minutes later we had his ass drug on the trailer ! we hauled him to the sale barn and after chousing him around and choking him down and transporting him half a day he still weighed 2050 .
thats a testament to these dogs and the folks that bred them the last who knows how many generations !

Really cool pictures and enjoy the stories ! Sorry about your dog , I hope that pup turns out for you    Sometimes when I'm runnin bird dogs with friends my job is to get the cattle to other sections . I'll be the first one to tell you I have no idea what I'm doin but some how the cattle haven't figured that out yet .. Haha Takecare |

Consider yourselves some of the lucky ones. As a young teen I got to go help catch cattle on Horses, but we didn't have the dogs. And the country was nowhere near that nice. I would love to spend a week on horses gathering cattle with dogs and everything that goes with it. When my dad was younger that's all he did on his days off of work and I was off chassin tale, Now that I look back I should have spent more time with him.....I really like the pictures.
