Seriously. How many of you just hunt your dogs for the sake of hunting with your dogs? How many of you run everything besides deer, dillos, possums, and skunks?

I don't think there is a dog out there that is trashier then a young Plott. lol That being said, we try to keep it to a minimum by just putting pups out to a older dog trailing or putting them out in fresh hog sign.

I got a jagd that will hunt his little a** off.  Ive had him a few months had not trashed on anything till last week. Ive seen him look at a skunk and turn the the other way but i guess he couldnt resist the one last week. Id rather him Trash as little as possible. Ive come to terms with myself and realize he is a jagd and he my trash. But to answer your question  id rather hunt just hogs. Im sure my buddies wouldn't like running with super trashy dog.

I think maybe what I shouldve asked is how many of you turn out with the intention of running a hog but if no hog encourage a jumped bobcat. Or a fox. Or clean coons out of feeders. Or run bear with the same dogs if its legal where you hunt. Seems like the normal thing to do where there are short, specific seasons like most other states. I remember fishing with live bait as a kid before I got involved in the bass tourny scene. Tournament fishing all but ruined fishing for me. I sure hate that. I have often wanted to stop fooling with hounds and get me a couple game Jacks or Jagds, but I'm afraid of destroying the ecosystem I would be hunting them in. I'd hiss them little daddy didn't marry mommys on everything from wood rats to bigfoot. Hounds and curs seem to be a lot like the bass fishing scene. It doesnt really count if youre using a bucket of minnows.

I personally would run other animals  if i had my own spots or my buddies  wouldnt mind. Im a hunter an i like to think that im helping out the local eco system by regulating over population of hogs or any other species that have lost or have no predators to regulate them.

lol   I've all ways kept a couple trashy ol hounds around that we would turn out just to see what we could run  [ besides deer and dillos  ] or throw into somebodys pack after the straight dogs struck .  but yeah I like the thrill of the unknown results  .

These dang Cambells I got were some trashy young dogs and I had a heck of a time breaking them but to answer your question running off game is the most aggravating thing in the world to me and trash breaking is of the utmost importance.

Bear or hog only for me. Now that is not to say if I saw a bigfoot or a black panther cross the road, I would have to turn the dogs loose on it.  Evil  lol.

I cut a young dog loose one time by his self.  There were some hogs that had moved into the area and some fresh sign in the bottoms. I walked along letting him do his thing and was pretty surprised at how he was doing. He got out of sight and all of a sudden about 100 yards up I heard him let out a big BAWWLLLL and then he hammered down and was baying his head off.  I got fired up and ran to him. He had a snapping turtle bayed tight on the riverbank.  Lol.

I have heard dillas do several times. I dont know. But I do know my buddy has a good dog that is older and been on lots and lots of hogs. I took him to a place where there were armadillos and all he did was run them for half the night. Where he usually hunts there isn't any dillas.  So maybe there is something to it.

My personal opinion is I don't think dillers smell anything like like a hog, not that I have ever smelled them. Reason being is coon dogs run them all the time & I am sure they don't smell anything like a coon.  I have even seen my Lab run a armadillo & I know they don't smell like a duck. lol Reason so many dogs run them is they are fairly slow, they make that weird noise when running & dogs usually put them in a hole pretty quick. Best excuse a hog hunter can give, they must smell like a hog. lol

I think your probably right. And being so low to the ground and there belly is covered in hair , I bet they leave a strong scent for a dog to trail.

My current pack is straight on hogs except a pup I'm workin with.  They are warm nose, run to catch, bay minded cur dogs.
-
I would love to run bear & lion but we don't have them around here.
-
I have been thinkin real hard about finding a finished trail & tree minded hound to switch hit on coons and bobcat!

This thread should be removed and banned!!Hunted last night and took a fellow hog dog man who I haven't hunted with for about a year. He brought his catch dog and I brought a few Cur dogs hit the spot and the dogs were huntin good ranging between 100-600 even some 800 yd circles. Walk for a bit and nothing started across a cow pasture and Zeus straight lines 400 to the river and starts chopping down in the rivers edge if Zeus bays it's a stud so we start to him about 200 out all the dogs get there and fall treed caught up and still no sound really good one! Take off running get 20yds out and Henry's layin on his back cowering strange get in to find them stretching a boar coon!!! Correct the dogs and continued huntin about an hr later Henry falls treed no sound get to him and low and behold another boar coon caught. These dogs ain't bumped a single piece of trash in months.Pretty embarrassing especially since I talked them up so good on the way to hunt dogs will dang sure make a liar out of you I've come to realize lol.
