How are folks with the Garmin alpha going about training dogs to come back or not go further with the tone?

I start my young ones out toning them everytime I call them in... no matter if they're close or far. Do this over and over... it doesn't take long for them to know what the tone means. Once the dogs learn it, you can watch them stop on the Garmin and listen for your call... or turn around and start back trailing out. All my older dogs I could tone out of a knock down drag out race. It sure makes it a pleasure hunting that way... I wish everyone would do it.

I start my pups on a 75 ft. ski rope when they are about 4-4 1/2 months old. When I call them I tone them. Even if I have to haul them in & then I make a big fuss over them. I never shock them when they are this young. I want them to learn to like coming to me. Once they have that down & they know to come to the tone, I'll take them for walks. always try to make it a win, win situation. When they are a little older or if they just flat out ignore you, then you might have to bump them to make them come but I have a handle on them before I ever start them on hogs. Even when I run older pups in my truing pen, I normally have a young pup, I am teaching to heel. It is fun when the hog crosses, I lead the young pup over there & encourage him to open. Most of the time they are raring to go.
You can do this on any age dog, I just start mine young.
