There are big dogs that handle the heat like smaller dogs. A lot depends on the breed and bloodlines. I also hunt by myself sometimes. I have a 75lb or so dog that can handle just about any hog by himself. I use a catchdog or .40 cal as back up. He has bird/bull in his breeding. It doesn't take a lot to get a good nose. Usually the more bird dog, the more bay u get.
To the original poster, are u in Texas ?

Question for you Buddylee as I know you hunt these crosses and have for a long time. Do you get as good of dogs when you keep breeding the cross bred dogs to each other or do you prefer the first generation crosses? You may have heard of Campbell and outlaw cur's both are said to be heavy in bird and bull blood .
I have always been super interested in the Campbell curs and have seen a lot of pics of them but never seen one go. But the outlaw curs I have not heard much about., but I would be interested to learn more about them.

The outlaw and Campbell dogs both went back to a dog that was owned by Randy Dominy . they both had one common ancestor but the lines were bred differently after that . Some of both lines hunted similar however the outlaw dogs are more intense bay dogs as a whole .

The few that I have seen crossed with gsp didn't have the same fire as the English pointers .

Elhew bird dogs seem to work pretty good . Georgia hunter's have been fond of bird bull crosses for years .
the original elhew dog breeder was probably one of the best dog men around because his dogs looked awesome and they were winners...born to hunt...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

The Campbell curs are mostly bird/bull with outlaws WAY back which are more hound/cur cross. The Campbell's are very tight bred dogs. Their gonna hunt but have other problems that are a different story. The 75lb dog is 1/4 Dane. Gives then leg and size without the slobbering heavy bodies that mastiffs have. PM ur cell number and I'll text u a couple pics.

The Campbell and outlaw cur's are both very tight bred lines . The outlaw dogs did not have hound in them . The outlaw dog (peanut) was a strong influence in the Campbell dogs and he is not far back in the lineage .

I own some Cambells and mine have incredible drive they're a bit queer acting don't care much about attention from people or other dogs only about hunting and chasing prey.I understand the outlaw's to be a birdbull type dog as well although I don't own any.Another similar Georgia dog breed I have heard great things about are Carey Walker dogs I know of a couple people who own some and they're hog dogs through and through and I believe bred similarly to the others.Maybe bird bull BMC just a speculation and don't quote me on this. One thing I know for sure is a lot of swine has been apprehended using the Georgia lines of dogs and I really like how they hunt.

The outlaw and the Campbell go back to a dog named peanut . Peanut was a well built red and white dog that had tons of heart and grit . He played a big role in the outlaw dogs as well as the Campbell dogs .

No hound or cur in the outlaw dogs . They all looked alot like bird dogs . Hard hunting and rough as a cobb. The Campbell dogs are bird and bull then crossed to one of the founding outlaw dogs.

Gary says one thing randy says another either way a handful of dogs can be traced back to the beginning of both dogs lineage. I liked the black boy dog randy got from Gary and breed into his dogs .
