Opinion on American Staffordshire Terrier

I was wondering what everyone's opinion was on using an American Staffordshire Terrier as a catchdog..........was thinking about getting a 4 month old pup and was hoping this would help me make my decision. Thanx

If you are talking about a true american stafordshire terrier as opposed to a american stafordshire bullterrier then I would think you would have a good chance at a decent dog. The Am staff is basically (or originally intended as the AKC version of the american pitbull terrier) so it should be similar in conformation etc and probabally less apt to dog aggresion. If it is a staffy bull then it may be a bit on the small side as a real big male would be 40#s or so.

Yes, I am talking about the American Staffordshire Terrier and not the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier...........I did do some research on them and they do seem to have less dog aggression. Thank you for your opinion...............

I started hunting with Am Staffs, AKC/UKC dual registered in the 1970s.  They were as good as any game bred pitbull.  Beware bad lines, mine were west coast lines.  I have not used an Am Staff in years, so things may be different.

Bud, were them west coast dogs "watch dog" lines? or was Casey not around yet? I know the "Tacoma" (sp) from up around Oregon'ish area were dual reg dog and were of good size and very functional.

i don't know anything about them , just know i have some way back in my Dogs.. now i can say this , they have no dog are human aggression !! but i do think you have to start them young , because afer one year I find they Curr Out to Everthing if you don't let them hit a hog young.. all in all , IMO i think it would make you a damn find CD ... they my run hot and be a little short winded , but smart and intense at the same time !

We had a little brindle staffordshire....he wasn't as tall as a normal pit but he had enough muscle to hold big hogs.  He was the coolest playful catchdog we ever had.  My little brother was 5 at the time and played with him all the time.  He was all play until he seen hogs or heard a bay and then all business. Im thinkin about gettin another one myself.

In fact the stud dog was from Oregon.  I don't know about any "Watchdog" lines.  It was about 1973.  These were actually AKC  show dogs with UKC papers too. I also trained them in Shutzhund and used them as demonstrator dogs when I trained police dogs.

I have hunted with Jughead's big male, "Major", he calls the line "American Boar Terriers (ABTs)."  At first, I tried ridiculed him for over promoting what was at first glance just another darned pit bull.  There is so much of that dog-jockey crap going on these days.  I figured whoa-boy, another dog con artist in the making!


Boy was I wrong!  The proof was found after a long day of hunting, a death march with bay dogs coming in and out of the brush in Major's face all day long, some of my yearling male jagdterriers actually jumping all over him wanting to play and then finally catching a hog after a long chase.  His ABT Major is better than 90% of the catch dogs I have hunted with and they are everything he says they are.  That male ABT was bumping into my jagdterriers and curs (males and females) all day long and there were no issues.  On the hog, he found himself a spot without taking out one of the little dogs and its was a done deal.  I am very impressed by the handle he has on that dog, its tolerance for other dogs and its sheer power at the catch.

Here is a photo of that big male American Boar Terrier, "Major" sitting next to my cranky growly little jagdterrier on my dog box.  He reminds me of those dual registered AKC/UKC Am Staffs of the 70's only he has more head and neck (e.g., bite)power.

thanks for the kind words Mr.Buddy , he wasn't born that way , i spent more time with that dog in the woods, in public stores, and around live stock of all kinds ..i thank you again for pointing out what i have seen in these dogs from the start..

I was going to get an Am Staff and see how it worked out, but was leaving Wal-Mart one evening and a lady was out in the parking lot giving away some pitbull pups and I just couldn't resist. I got him on October 11th and he was 8 weeks old. So far he has turned out to be a really great dog, very trainable, loves to go with me, good around the horses and cows and absolutely loves people.
