My buddy and I were just given two walker hounds that are just skin and bones. What the best thing to help them gain weight? im just giving them a little feed morning and evening right now to help work them up to more feed. Any help is gratefully appreciated.

It's not that the guy was upfront with us and said he wasn't ever able to up the cost for feed bill so he basically just let them starve.

Worm the dogs with safeguard or whatever give them a dose of Ivermectin and feed them a generous portion of food everyday worm them again in two weeks and use the Ivermectin once a month they'll fatten up in no time.

I add cooked rice to dog meals when I want to put on weight...Some common items around the house that are high in fat will also help.  Examples: left over grease from cooking ground meat.  Pours well over dog food.

So I am going through this right now with my American Leopard Cur. I took her to the vet just to make sure she was parasite free, which I am still waiting on the results on the sample. Vet said in meantime triple her feed and supplement scrambled or hard boiled eggs in there for extra calories. Good luck with yours.

Red nose I figured that tripling their feed would make them sick or kill them? Or atleast that was my way of thinking and I'm no professional by any means haha

I don't know where you are at but in additional to the common things (increasing calories and vaccinating), make sure your dogs have plenty of water and they can get warm this time of year.

You can take a skinny dog and stick them outside with no water and cold temps and they can still get dehydrated and thin.   A couple other things to consider.  I think skinny dogs should be on shorter chains or smaller kennels.

I literally had a dog run himself to death years ago.  He would run on his chain all day.  Even though he was hunted, he would just never stop running.  I got so fed up with him, I gave him back to the guy I got him from as a pup.  He didn't believe all the running on the chain.  A couple months later the dog died.  No matter how much I fed, I just could give him enough calories.

So, look at the obvious things first.  General health is a big deal.  If he is a short haired dog in super cold conditions, he may need more heat.

I have a dog now that runs circles alot. He's what I consider a hard keeper because he will run himself thin. When I move chains around he will have a bald spot ran in the shape of a circle within a few days. Lol. He will calm down for a while if he gets hunted hard but he'll build that energy back up and be circling again before long. Lol

It helps putting weight on by feeding 2 or 3 times a day instead of once!

THE BEST AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADD WEIGHT TO A DOG.  GO TO WALMART AND BUY YOU A TUB OF LARD.  ITS THE ONE IN THE GREEN/WHITE BUCKET, JUST STRAIGHT LARD.  ITS ABOUT 7 OR 8 BUCKS FOR A 5 LB TUB.  START OUT BY ADDING A TABLESPOON TO THEIR FEED.  SOMETIMES, THE LARD CAN GIVE THEM THE RUNS IF YOU USE TOO MUCH, SO MONITOR THE STOOL,  A SKELETON DOG DOESN'T NEED THE RUNS.  I HAVE FOUND THAT A TABLESPOON IS ABOUT RIGHT.  GET THE CHEAPEST HAMBURGER MEAT IN THE STORE, AND GIVE THEM ABOUT A 1/2 LB OF HAMBURGER MEAT MIXED IN WITH THEIR DRY FOOD AND A TABLESPOON OF LARD.  RUN SOME HOT WATER OVER THE FEED AFTER YOU GET IT MIXED UP, BUT NOT TOO MUCH.  JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP THE DOG FROM SCARFFING IT DOWN TOO FAST AND GETTING CHOKED.  WHEN YOU ADD TOO MUCH WATER TO THE FEED, IT CAUSES THE INTESTINAL TRACT TO EVACUATE TO QUICKLY, WHICH ACTUALLY REDUCES THE ABSORBTION RATE OF THE FOOD.  ALSO,YOU CAN BUY A 10 LB. BAG A CHICKEN LEG QUARTERS PRETTY CHEAP.  FEED THEM MORNING AND NIGHT.  GIVE THEM THE DOG FOOD W/HAMBURGER AND LARD ON ONE FEEDING, THEN ON THE SECOND FEEDING, GIVE THEM A WHOLE "RAW" CHICKEN LEG QUARTER.  IN 10 DAYS, YOU WON'T RECOGNIZE HOW GOOD THE DOG LOOKS.

DE-WORM THEM FOR 3 DAYS IN A ROW WITH SAFEGUARD (AT THE CORRECT DOSE).  ALSO, THE DOGS MAY HAVE A TAPEWORM INFESTATION.  THEY POSSIBLY COULDHVE HAD TAPEWORMS FOR A GOOD LONG TIME.  GIVE THEM SOME DRONCIT TABLETS (1 PILL PER 15 LS.).

Google satin balls, it will really help and put the weight on quick, it wouldn't hurt to give them the safe guard 5-7 days in a row just to be sure they are treated good, but those satin balls are really good, make sure they are where they can stay warm, a shivering dog is burning calories and losing weight and if they are skin and bones they need all the weight they can get.
