I have a cut dog so I would like to know. Given the choice of Durvet pen aqueous and Combi pen-48 which would you use to treat. I don't know the difference in what they do and the people at TSC don't have a clue which would be the right one. Which would you keep on hand to use for treating cuts and punctures. The cut is drawn togather with about a 1/8" gap so am using water to flood it twice a day for about 10 min as I have seen recomended many times. Cut is on back of neck where she can not reach it to lick it. At what dosage would you recomend? Just starting to learn and your input is great importance to my knowledge. Thank you kindly for your input. John

I have the durvet pen aqueous type that tsc sells. I was told that the durvet was the 24hr lasting penicillin, the other might be a longer lasting not sure on that. But the one I have I give about 2-3cc either in the muscle or under the skin of neck about every other day.

Forrest, thank you for your reply. I am grateful. Just went and got the pen aqueous because I didn't want to wait any longer and figured anything was better than waiting until a problem existed. John

I've been using pen aqueous and water therapy and have yet to see an infection set in so far on any pokes or cuts.
day 1 -3cc day 2 -2cc day 3 -2cc day 4 -1cc
5-10 minute flush from the hose 2-3 times a day

Cull Buck, thank you for your reply. I have given her 3cc and done the hydro flush this morning and tonight. Your willingness to help is greatly appreciated. Injected sub-q. John

Johnf , thank you, I guess I am headed in the proper direction. Probably didn't need to inject as the cut is only about 2.5" long and was really clean but am not taking any chances. John

John, I've always given the sub-q also. 3cc's every other day for 3 rounds. I only give it on bad, nasty cuts or if one does happen to get infected. The theory of not wanting the dogs to build an immunity to antibiotics... I want them to work when given.
Most cuts just get cleaned, flushed out with betadine and stapled or sewed... leaving a drain. Hydrotherapy is the way to go on deep punctures, cuts left open or when the staples/sutures get pulled out.

Mike, thank you. I thought I was doing the right thing with the pen but I guess I jumped the gun and shouldn't think too much. From the way it looked it probably didn't need the pen. I will now better next time. Should I just back off on giving anymore pen and watch closely. Thanks again John

this is something i have used for years. flush the cut with rubbing alcohol. then spray with eclipse wound spray . eclipse kills the bad bacteria leaves the good. wound will heal from the inside out .never had any infections.get the eclipse at co-op.

Thanks to all who responded. You put me on the right track and got me thru a case of greenhorn panic. Now I can move on and add this to my library of knowledge. It sure sticks in your mind better when it is you on the spot. John
